My partner and his one yearly tonic clinic seizure..

Fri, 07/14/2017 - 21:34
Hi All Wondering if anyone is in a similar situation. My partner has had one seizure a year since I've known him. They have all been after big nights on the booze. Since figuring this out he has stopped drinking to excess and over the past year has been seizure free. But almost on year on the dot of the last one , being tired, stressed and dehydrated he has another. He hasn't had a drink all month because we are doing "dry July" so seemingly not just booze related. The drs have now put him on Keppra and he's essentially changed into a zombie overnight. While we understand there is potential for more than one seizure a year, it seems excessive to be put on 1000mg pills when history shows he has them once a year. Reading on here I see there are different types and they suit different people in different ways. But does anyone know of any other option than the meds? Or know someone who has only ever had one singular seizure a year? I think they have all been tonic clonic and typically we don't end up in hospital (until the most recent one). He's basically feeling like the chance of him having another one is so slim that there must be another alternative. Especially because hours before a seizure he shows signs that one is coming. Is there something he can take at that point instead of continuously taking meds? Any suggestions medical or alternative appreciated :) Thanks in advance!

drinking, stress, dehydration

drinking, stress, dehydration, poor sleep and more are common seizure triggers so  he is not doing himself any favors.there are emergency meds one can take if one does get a warning (or has a prolonged seizure or cluster of seizures) but some things to consider (only intervention meds vs daily meds)...using emergency meds too much can reduce their effectiveness (once a year is probably not often at all)seizures can change so one no longer gets warningsseizures can cause damage such that it causes more seizures to happen oftentimes it takes people a while to get used to a drug so giving it a few months might be enough. some people recommend B6, there might be some other supplements that also could help.and maybe he could take a smaller dose, something to ask about if the side effects continue after giving it a good try. has he had a recent EEG where it would indicate a need for a different response than before? has he considered a second opinion with an epilepsy specialist (an epileptologist)?there are diets that help some people, he can learn more by reading info on this site (see Learn section).

May I suggest talking to your

May I suggest talking to your doctor about a med called LaMICtal, If that dose not work, I went a whole year without arua or seizures taking a martial arts class. It was not so much what I learned, the over 100 jumping jack, stretching, working my body at least 5 days a week.  You have heard it before," use it or lose it". Exercise make sense. As soon as I stopped everything came back with in a week. Good luck, life with out seizures can be amazing, always try new things don't let it win.
