What is something that would make your life with epilepsy easier?

Mon, 11/24/2014 - 07:18

Hi there, my name is Jacqui, I am 23 years old, from New Zealand and currently a full time student.
For University am lucky enough to be writing a paper on the effects of seizures on the lives of both young adults and adults. Through this I am also trying to research into some ways socitey and local bodies can asssist in improving the day to day live of people living with epilepsy.
I too suffer for epilepsy, I have grand mal seizures, sometimes a few a week although they have decresed to as little a one every two weeks in the past couple of months and although I can draw on some of my own personal experiences with the condition it would be great to hear from a wider community of people as many of you will have different struggles and perspectives to myself.
Thank you in advance :)

JacquiThe thing that needs to

JacquiThe thing that needs to get out is epilepsy is more common then Parkensons. ALZ and strokes combined. One in every 25 people will have a seizure disorder at some time in their lives. We are looked at as if w are bad because of epilepsy. It is all because of the stigma associated with epilepsy which has been arround for thousands of years. What most people do not know is back in the 60's there were still people with epilepsy being put in homes away from the public. In the 70's some states were still not letting people with epilepsy get a marriage license. I know I have been living and dealing with epilepsy for 50 years. Breast cancer is known but it took years to get it out where it is today. Epilepsy and this foundation have been working on this issue fro years now. But When I landed in Dallas there was no EFA. Here there was teh DEA (Dallas Epilepsy Association) After a few years Carol (president of EFA) moved to Washington and worked for the EFA since they were going to go nation wide. So I do know things move slow but they are advancing. Most people think a seizure is a grand mal seizure. I can have a seizure now in public and in a group and most people would know nothing about the seizure, Unless they knew what to look for and saw it hit since most of my seizures are now a few seconds long.People need to be informed about the different types of epilepsy and the types of seizures. Kind of like cancer which kind of cancer are we talking about?? Breast cancer, throat cancer, prostate cancer lung cancer and the list goen on. So which direction are you wanting to go? Inform people about epilepsy or the types of epilepsy. A tonic clonic seizure, a partial seizure, an absence seizure a focal seizure which if it generalizes looks like a tonci clonic???  I do hope this helps and your paper does good. Please come back and let us know who this went Joe
