Surgery outcomes due to seizures caused by Schizencephaly

Thu, 10/13/2011 - 13:42
Hi, About 6 months ago I was referred to an Epileptologist and have since been testing to see if I was a candidate for surgery to control my seizures that I have been dealing with the last 22 years (I am 42). I have since found out, through the testing, that what I have always thought was Cerebral Palsy, I have weakness on my right side, is really Schizencephaly, a rare birth defect that happens during the second trimester. I have also found out that I am a candidate to remove this defect thus hopefully eliminating the seizures. My question is does anyone here have this defect and had surgery to to resolve seizures caused by this? If so how has the outcome been? Thanks for any insight, Paul

Paul,I am also interested to know about surgery to resolve seizures. My son who is 4 1/4 years old was diagnosed with schizencephaly a week after he was born. He started to have seizures on a daily basis two years ago. He's been on Keppra and eventually became resistant. He's on Depakote and Topomax now. We don't see much improvement. We haven't discussed surgery with my son's doctors yet so I don't even know if he is a good candidate for surgery. Is my son old enough for surgery?Thank you,Wan
