Changing from Topamax to Lamictal

Wed, 02/27/2008 - 15:29
I am now taking topamax 200 mg a day my doctor is changing me to lamictal 200 mg a day. I have complex partial szs, and I am very nervous about the change, I am a very nerous person anyways and I know one of the side effect of the topamax is nervouness, he said the lamictal may help with this. So I was just wanting to see how anyone else is doing on this med and any feed back, I'm 33 and was just dx in May of 2007 with this so still kinda new, this will be my first med switch, and I'm not sure what to expect : ( but hoping it will be a good one. Thanks Stephanie

I hope your transition goes well.  All I can tell you is that Topomax was one of the many drugs that did not work for my 4-year-old daugher -- and it had the worst side effects, turning her into a zombie.  Lamictal reduced her seizures by 50 percent with far fewer side effects, and now she's doing even better on the ketogenic diet.  Good luck.

I haven't tried any other drugs, but I've found Lamictal to be very mild with few side effects. It's doing a fine job of controlling my epilepsy.

Medications appear to be a journey moreso than a destination. It's a matter of what works for you, personally, and which side effects you prefer. It can be frustrating and worrisome to switch, but finding the right treatment can make a person a lot happier.

I was on Lamictal for a number of years but i am currently on a combination of Topamax and Lamictal. When i was on Lamictal by itself there were significantly fewer side effects to what i am experiencing now.

I hope things work out well for you.
