Keppra is not working

Sun, 12/17/2006 - 21:18
My stepbrother takes keppra and has had two tonic clonic seizures in the last 2 weeks. He has never had them that close together...What can we tell the doctor to get him to give Will different medicine.... If this keeps up my brother has said he's going to stop taking the Keppra. He's 19, so that's his choice to make. Seems like a lose lose situation.

If your stepbrother stops medicine cold turkey, he will end up with clusters of seizures. Not a good plan. Meds dont always completely stop seizures. And if he dont have them, that close together, it is possible it was caused by something else, lack of sleep, stress, different foods he is eating.... Please talk with the neuro first before making any changes Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

My daughter also got worse on Keppra, with an increase in seizures. Once she was off and on another medicine we saw improvements. I agree that you really need to make a change with a doctor's supervision, and not stop cold turkey. This can actually make seizures much worse. Lori

George - NYC MAYBE TOO MUCH. I am a great fan of Keppra, having been one of the first in the USA to be put on it when it was released nearly 6 years ago. I began on 3000mg per day, but (because of side effects) about a year ago I asked my neurologist to let me try to get by on 2250mg daily. It works even better. Your brother must remember that it will take his neurological system many months to adjust to the drug and have it work to its full effectiveness. Stopping it abruptly can be asking for more than just a mass of tonic-clonic seizures. It would be playing with his very life. Do not make any adjustments without full awareness of his neurologist. And get ready for some unexpected outbursts.
