How do you know if you're having seizures at night?

Wed, 10/25/2006 - 19:49
A week or so ago, I noticed I had a pretty sore bruise on my elbow, and I have no idea how I got it. Then a few days later I found one on my forearm, still, I don't know where it came from. Also about a month or so before that I noticed I had bitten my tongue on the side and it was really sore, and once again, I do not remember doing that. I don't know if it's just my memory loss,a nd I don't remember doing this stuff or am I having seizures at night. All three were different situations. Any comments would be helpful! Nichole

Hi Nichole, before I was diagnosed, I would wake up sore all over- as if somebody had beat the snot out of me with a baseball bat overnight. The bitten tongue and bruises are all familiar signs too. Had you been drinking the evening before? I wouldn't remember the sz since that type causes unconciousness. Ask a friend who you think won't get freaked out if you do sz to spend a few nights with you. In over nine years all my sz (classified as Primary Generalised Tonic-Clonic) have been nocturnal. And most of all, confide in your MD. Check your state's laws on driving restrictions before you see your doc. Most of the time the MD has to report you to DMV who will then pull your license for 6-12 mos. I get around that by phrasing it as a hypothetical situation. The phrase I usually use is 'What would you say to a patient who complained of...(insert symptoms here). A doc you have a good rapport with ought to catch on quickly. If it's true all your sz are at night, strongly emphasize it. You might just be able to keep driving. I've been on Lamictal over two years now, and my sz are under control whith minimal side effects. And I haven't lost my license. Best of fortune to you. Let us know how things turn out for you, eh?- marko

Hi Nichole, I agree with dundee. During all of my pre-surgical testing this year I had a sleep deprived VEEG for the first time and the epiletologists and nurses were able to witness everything right there for the first time with me while I was sleeping. My seizures became nocturnal early last year.
