first seizure during pregnancy

Thu, 02/03/2011 - 10:02
I was just wondering if anyone else experienced their first seizure ever during pregnancy.  I had my first grand mal at 9 months pregnant and have had them ever since (on lamictal).  My doctor says that it is possible that it is something I've always had, but that it wasn't triggered until the pregnancy.  Just wanted to see if this had happened to anyone else and what, if any, possible explanantion there was for it.

From what I've just researched in medscape, it could be eclampsia.

"Eclampsia is commonly defined as new onset of grand mal seizure activity during pregnancy or postpartum in a woman with signs or symptoms of preeclampsia.

Eclampsia is defined by tonic-clonic seizure activity (focal or generalized). Most cases of eclampsia present in the third trimester of pregnancy.  More than 70% occur prior to delivery, with about 80% of eclamptic seizures occurring intrapartum or within the first 48 hours following delivery."

I would talk to your doc about this.  GOOD LUCK!     Phylis Feiner Johnson    www.epilepsytalk.com

Hello Ladies, Happy Hoildays! Well It seems that I am not the only one ! I started having seizures when I was 5 months prego.at the age of 18 and now 6 years later Im still having them. My pregnancy was completly normal no issues besides seizures .  I had my right temporal lobe surgery in Sept of 2010 and still they have continued, In 2011 I went 6 months the longest that I ever have since they began and since Nov 2011, I have had one every month I have tried progestrone cream, I have tried 5 or 6 diff meds which I seem to have more seizues on meds then off. I have tried BC pills and they just seem to make them worse just like AED's . My seizures I believe have something to do with my period and my hormones. This month my cycle started on the 22 and now here it is the 24 of Nov and I had a seizure this morning. If anyone has any info or advice that would help it would be greatly appreicated. Thanks.

This was also my case.  I started during my third trimester of my second pregnancy.  I believe my seizures were due to me discontinuing Reglan (taking it for nausua) cold turkey and for too long.  No doctors have any idea why I had them and why I still do.  All my tests come back normal.  I believe there is also something wrong with my hormones, and I'm seeing a new gyno to look into that angle.

I'm with you though, doesn't seem very typical to just start having seizures during your pregnancy.  I was not pre-elampsic as my blood pressure is extremely low.  If you were pre-eclampsic, I'm sure your doctor's would have told you.
