Aging and Seizures

Mon, 04/01/2019 - 10:51
My question is, has anyone noticed seizures coming back or more frequent the older they get? I am asking here because obviously women's hormones and body changes as they get older. I was seizure free for 12 years, controlled with medicine and I turned 40 last year. I don't want to call my experiences seizures because I don't want to jump to conclusions. When I was younger (teens, early twenties) I would have convulsive seizures and lose consciousness. I know something is changing but I don't know what it is. It's hard to describe but I feel fuzzy headed and confused. On Friday I heard myself speaking to my boss at work but I didn't even know what I was saying, it's like I'm outside of my body. Last year I was driving and I had to pull over because I didn't know where I was or how I got there. It was at a place that I have been to many times but I couldn't place my surroundings. This is very disappointing because for a decade I have taken my medicine every morning and not given my condition a second thought. No problems, no incidences. p.s I do have a dr.'s appointment, just wanted to see if other women have experienced anything where their seizures are changing or returning due to hormones changing. Thanks for any and all opinions.

I'm going through menopause; I can relate...my mom told me it sounds like menopause fog.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/17/well/live/the-brain-fog-of-menopause.html

It seems to be quite common

It seems to be quite common for seizure patterns to change significantly, or even return, when women hit their 40s, ie coinciding with hormonal changes. Peri-menopause often starts about then. I've never had controlled seizures but they suddenly went completely crazy at age 42. A lot of other women I've spoken to have suddenly had problems when they hit their 40s. Including women who had been sz free for some time and they suddenly returned.Good you've got a dr's appointment. Hopefully it is just hormonal symptoms you're experiencing and not seizures, but be prepared for the fact the can return. Hormones have a lot to answer for! In the meantime, I really hope you're not driving because if there's ANY chance you're having seizure activity then it's obviously too dangerous, never mind the legal consequences.

Thank you.  At least I don't

Thank you.  At least I don't feel so crazy.  Sad yes, but not crazy.
