Military/Depression/Alcoholism

Wed, 11/14/2018 - 01:57
Had my first seizure during an extreme physical challenge equivalent to several triathlons. I was throwing up and ultimately seized then went into a coma for near a week. I was honorably discharged with a disability rating. After testing it was determined I did not have epilepsy. My dreams of life as a career military man were crushed and I self medicated my depression with alcohol. As my alcoholism progressed so did the intensity of my detoxification each time I stopped drinking. 20 years after my medical discharge I had my first seizure from a detox. After that, I had about 6 more seizures: all from detoxing. The most recent gm I bit the corner of my tongue off and severely bruised the rest. It seems as though I have opened Pandora’s Box because I would jerk in my sleep and bite my tongue or cheek. I finally started medicine and it definitely helps. I know I am an alcoholic and I attend aa meetings and ptsd group therapy through the V.A. Through all this I have been able to maintain a job and continue education in my field. But, it has been a struggle. Weeks of nothing but broth to eat due to the injury of my tongue, sleepless nights and the loss of confidence has been brutal. That’s my story.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and for your willingness to serve & protect our country. I can relate in so many ways to your experiences. Career change or lack of career due to seizures. Depression. Ptsd, Self medicating (was not alcohol for me) Seizures when trying to stop self medicating. I have severe memory loss. I totally hear you. I’m sober now & I know it’s frustrating to try & beat an addiction, fight depression and get healthy. But anyone with the heart of a soldier like yours can do it. I’m not sure of your physician situation but you may need more than 1 - neurologist, psychologist, dietician, general & to sign releases so they can all talk to each other. Your meds may need to be changed. I know you work a program through the VA but I never knew how much a professional therapist can help. I wish you well. Don’t give up, I’m brand new to this group & don’t know much about my seizures & think my doctor sucks but it’s nice to know we’re not alone.
