My 15 month old son

Tue, 06/19/2018 - 07:08
Hi. I'm so new to this and we haven't got a clear diagnosis yet. My 15 month old son goes to the pediatric neurologist on Friday. I just wanted to say what's been going on with him and see if anyone has similar experience. First my husband noticed on two different occasions were my son's left leg would jerk (he said almost like a muscle spasm) for a about 15-20 seconds and just quit. Then we both started noticing 4 times now that our son will just "stare off" or "daydream" and we can not get him to respond, look at us, or anything when he does this and it lasts about 30-45 seconds. We really didn't give these incidences very much thought because kids can do these. It wasn't until June 9th we put my son in his high chair at about 8:30 for a late supper and gave him his pizza. He was eating then all of a sudden his whole upper body started shaking/jerking like he was cold or something. We felt of him and his body temp. was normal. His legs never did twitch or jerk that we seen. Then I ran and got my phone to video it by the time I got back he was just jerking on his left arm and it was drawn into his chest. When he tried to straighten it to help himself eat it was just jerking so hard he could barely use it. He was alert the whole time and trying to eat with the other hand. After the jerking stopped his eyes looked so tired and he looked pale. He finish eating a few more bites and then was ready to bed and went straight to sleep all night. This is when I took him the Children's hospital ER. They was stumped (in their words) if this was a seizure or not. It was a couple days after so they wanted him to see the specialist in that clinic instead of doing a bunch of test with radiation that maybe the specialist wouldn't need. I'm a Registered Nurse and as my gut as a mom tells me something just isn't right. He is normal playful, kind of whiny at times anymore, boy. He is meeting all developmental stages on time. If anyone has had anything similar or anything please share. Friday can't get here soon enough so maybe I can have some answers

What you describe sounds like

What you describe sounds like seizures.  Sounds like you are doing a great job at tracking the details of what happens during these events.  When Mom and I visited doctors over the years I'm not sure if any general neurologist ever inquired of which arm or leg jerked, but epilepsy specialists value these details as it helps them determine a focus. Sometimes these are hereditary, but often it is the result of an injury or high fever.  Can you think of any possible causes?  My epilepsy is believed to be the result of a high fever I had at six month old. Did you have any bad bumps, falls, or strong drugs or treatments while son was in the womb?

I think being a nurse is why

I think being a nurse is why I know to get all the details I can and catch what I can on video. He did have a fever for about 5 days a little before this started that landed him in the hospital, but they wasn't very high. My son is a typical boy that has no fear, so yes he has honestly bumped his head (and some have been hard) several times. Actually 2 hours before he did the big episode he slipped on some water and fell straight back hitting his head pretty hard. No bruise or anything thought. Thank you for your comment it is very much appreciated. I'm just nervous but want answers so I can prepare or be relieved.

registered Nurse and Mother

registered Nurse and Mother wants answers so she can protect her son.Well your son could be having seizures. Those times when he stared off or w daydreaming could be absence seizures in them the person looks like they are day dreaming They could also be focal seizures which can look like the person is day dreaming. Those muscle jerking's or twitching could be myoclonic seizures. myoclonus is twitching and every has them now and then. Think of hiccups. they are muscles twitches we all get. Research the learn section under types of seizures. Many people workin in the ER know how to deal with lots of everyday things. The tsts they do are generally done for everyday things. Wait for the meeting with neurologist and research.I was older but with medications he can still meet his development stages. I don't kow if they even had development states when I was diagnosed.I was being written up for daydreaming in class. I was also one of the best in pop quizzes so I had no problems. I have done many different things in my life including working for the AT&T executive appeals offices solving issues with one of their project. I was part owner in  small business. I excelled in sports. So research this site since it has a lot of information. I hope this helps and your son gets the assistance he needs and he excels in the things he wants to do.Joe
