Zarontin side effects?

Sun, 12/16/2018 - 14:03
I'm new to the group, hello everyone. My 7yr old son was diagnosed last March with absence epilepsy, we started him on Depakote and 3 months later his eeg showed him to be seizure free on the meds. Since this summer we started seeing an increase in behavior changes/ mood swings and aggression. On a recent visit with the Neurologist he stated that this could be due to the Depakote and we may need to switch his medication. This past week I finally realized that he has been having seizures again and probably has for a couple of months although these are very brief 1-2 seconds but multiple times a day. Anyway my question is about the Zarontin, I'm worried about the side effects. What are others thoughts about this med and how has it effected their child? How long did it take to build up in the system and get to a correct dosage?

One can look up common drug

One can look up common drug side effects, I like medscape’s drug listings. Easy to check common side effects and interaction issues (search on drug name and medscape then click on the result on medscape). The correct dosage of epilepsy meds is dependent on the person, but each drug has an expected therapeutic range and an approach for increasing or decreasing the drug (some of that info is in the medscape link but really get that onfo from the prescribing doc, use the info to ask better questions). One generally reaches a steady state after one has been taking the same dose for 5.5 half lives of a drug (but age and other factors can impact that).
