tegretol xr hunger issues

Fri, 09/24/2010 - 19:52
Was just wondering if anyone else taking Tegretol Xr has experienced an increase in appetite or constantly wanting to snack?  My doctor gave me the OK to go off the Tegretol but after about 2 weeks, I started having auras like a seizure was around the corner.  The positive side was that I didn't feel hungry every 2-3 hours and felt "better".  Now, it's day 5 that I'm back on the Tegretol Xr and I hate it.  Even if I don't eat alot, I feel fat.  I'm 5'2 and weigh about 117.  That's not too bad, but I'd like to have my pre-pregnancy weight and clothes back.  I've tried taking Super Hoodia 2000, but the Tegretol seems to override it.   Help!

This comes from wellsphere.com: "Drugs with Weight Gain as a Side Effect"

 Class:

Anticonvulsants
Names: Lamictal®, Tegretol®
Effects: Anticonvulsants are used mainly to treat seizure disorders but are also prescribed to treat bipolar disorder and certain types of depression.
Appetite:         These drugs tend to cause elevated insulin levels in the blood (hyperinsulinemia) and increased appetite, leading to weight gain.

I have been on tegretol for 20 years.  When I first began taking tegretol, I definitely gained weight.  Probably about 7-10 pounds.  Right now, I am in my last week of weaning off tegretol after all these years.  I have noticed a 50% loss of appetite, a huge increase in energy, and difficulty in falling asleep.  While on tegretol, it was always a struggle to lose weight.  The only remedy I can recommend is liposuction which helped me stimulate my metabolism and ultimately lose 10 pounds.   Another side effect I noticed from tegretol was water retention.  Tegretol has overall been a good drug but the weight gain issue is really aggravating.  I am excited to see how my weight will change once the tegretol is completely out of my system.  Has anyone out there noticed a substantial weight loss after weaning off tegretol?????
