Teen going off meds after 2 years - Scared mom!

Sun, 03/17/2019 - 21:22
My 14 year old daughter had two seizures two years ago, when she was 12. She has taken lamictal twice a day since then and has done well. Her MRI was clear, and her EKGs at the time were normal. We are now nearing the time when her doctor says we can wean her off. While I see the benefits of this, and hope that going off the meds will help her be less “spaced out” all the time, I am terrified!! How do I get over the fear of the seizures returning?

Beats me, I'm about to go

Beats me, I'm about to go through that myself. Right now I'd like to know if kiddo still needs medication as there's a chance she doesn't.. so there's that (vs having to have medication for a seriously long time to forever). We will wean over the summer since the tapering off lamotrigine can take a long time and I want to keep school issues to a minimum (but there's kind of no great time). Post about what helps.

Hey there, I've tried coming

Hey there, I've tried coming off meds *twice*, and yeah, for sure it's scary, and I definitely had a lot of anxiety about it. But we weighed the pros and cons and decided it's worth the risk, as I'm sure you have too. Worse case scenario, you end up where you started. I wasn't successful and had to re-start meds each time, but we got a lot of information from my coming off. We learned more about what dose I need, what possible triggers may be, and what my brain can do when I'm not bogged down by drugs. It helps to know it wasn't a waste trying. What I told myself at the time to deal with the stress was just something along the lines of that whatever will be, will be, and no amount of worrying is going to change the outcome. I also told myself the useful silly quote I found online to "be optimistic, and if it doesn't work I can always cry about it later." There's not much to *do* about anxiety, it's just a matter of coping with the stress. So in terms of "conquering" fear, you won't make it go away, but you can hopefully find a way to manage it enough to be productive and control your response to it. Best of luck to you and your daughter! Lots of people have been where you've been, you're not alone, and yeah, anxiety is nearly always part of the package with seizures.Take care!B

Here's my cliff notes version

Here's my cliff notes version and Questions??I am on vacation visiting family in Brazil.  I have two weeks remaining before my meds run out.  I spoke with my sister, who is a Doctor, she put me in touch with a Pharmacist.  He's been in the business for forty years.  I asked him if he can get my Lamotrigine 300mg ER Tabs.  He frowned and asked who in the world would prescribe such a dosage.  When he found out I took two of those a day, he about fell over saying it was nearly criminal.  He explained the largest dose they manufacture and sell in Brazil is 200mg, and that would only be one a day and in the very worst of cases.  He told me to speak with another Dr friend, a Neurologist and an actual neurosurgeon.  The same doctor it turns out who removed a tumor from both my aunt and uncle brains.  I met with him and he wondered why America loved to over-medicate patients, he had his suspicions regarding the dollar factor but stated he would need to know my whole history before coming to a conclusion.  I explained the four doctors I have seen over six years and that each just changed the meds, added a med or increased the dose.  Mind you I never had Tonic seizures UNTIL I began meds.  It was only focal and Atonic and that was infrequently though yes I would have migraines.  I was placed on E Meds when I had an Atonic seizure in a doctors office six years ago.  I was diagnosed with epilepsy just after birth, but at age seven the meds were discontinued. So my question is.  Has anyone lowered their dosage on Lamotrigine without medical advice?  How have you felt?  How did you go about reducing your med dosage per day?  What was the final outcome?  Thanks in advance all.
