Missed Depakote dosage

Tue, 09/17/2019 - 10:33
I’ve been on Depakote for over 8 years and I missed taking my dosage for about 5 days due to my prescription running out. It’s been extremely hard to sleep during the nights and my mood has been up and down. I finally got back on and ended up having a very bad episode of Myoclonic seizures. Has anyone had this problem?

Hi Pizzahead,  Thank you for posting. It’s important that you’retaking your medication as prescribed by your doctor, it gives you the best chance to achieve the goals of epilepsy therapy: no seizures and no side effects. However, we understand that managing medications isn't easy and can be costly and hard to get.  We do have programs that can assist in this process, by visiting: https://www.epilepsy.com/living-epilepsy/247-helpline/patient-assistance  It’s also important that your following up with your healthcare team to discuss these new side effects you describe, as well as, any changes in seizure frequency/type, changes in moods, behaviors& symptoms, to help determine what individual treatment plan is best for you. https://www.epilepsy.com/learn/treating-seizures-and-epilepsy/seizure-and-epilepsy-medicines/importance-taking-medication My Seizure Diary: https://www.epilepsy.com/living-epilepsy/epilepsy-foundation-my-seizure-diaryis a great tool for not only tracking seizures, recording your medical history, medications, side effects, moods, behaviors & triggers, which can be shared with your healthcare team. My Seizure Diary also helps you remember what to do - you can have reminders of when to take your medicines, when to refill a prescription, or when you have medical appointments or tests. You can track changes over time, keep records of your medications, and create a Seizure Response Plan or Action Plan: https://www.epilepsy.com/living-epilepsy/toolbox/seizure-forms  to share with your family, friends and healthcare team, which is a helpful tool for those who are close to you to understand what do if you have seizure. A seizure alert device is also helping in detecting seizures and notify someone who can help respond. https://www.epilepsy.com/sites/core/files/atoms/files/DAS100_Seizure_Alert_Devices_09-2018_FINAL2.pdf                                                                                                                                     For additional information about Depakote, please visit: https://www.epilepsy.com/medications/divalproex-sodium  It may be helpful to connect with other people who live with epilepsy, to ask questions, share experiences, find & give support to each other.
