Keppra and HEADACHES???? Anyone else????

Sun, 01/31/2010 - 16:43

I was diagnosed with epilepsy late November 2009....I started Keppra 5 days ago and started on 500 mg once a day and I am supposed to move up. I have noticed the medicine makes me feel wiped out like a zombie, but I can deal with that if I have to....but what I am having trouble with is that I am having severe headaches and I think it is from the Keppra...I am on the generic form, but I really don't want to try another medicine. I am hoping this will go away as I get used to it.....I was tried on 2 other medicines before Keppra and I had an immune IgE allergic reaction to both Lamictal and Lyrica. After that experience I came off of all of it, and decided to change my diet and try to live healthy, that worked for 3 days, then I started having 2-3 seizures a day until I had a big one where I passed out at home alone with my 3 year old, and was lucky that he dialed my mom and told her mommy was sleeping...she new something was wrong, so now here I am....that seizure was wednesday and it is sunday....I started on the Keppra wednesday night and I haven't had a seizure since, but I am in such pain with the headaches. Anyone else had this problem with Keppra? If so PLEASE tell me it will go away and I will adjust. I am at the end of my rope with these seizure drugs.....any input??????

I'm taking Keppra XR twice daily for 11 months and haven't had the first headache, but everyone responds differently.  Are you taking any add'l meds that could be interacting with your Keppra?

I am also on some other meds....I had a complete thyroidectomy in 1-2009 and have had worse seizures since then. I am on 2 Vitamin D pills a day, and 4000 of tums, as well as Synthroid and xanax that I have been on for 2 years 3 mg. a day for PTSD issues. That is all I am on except tylenol for the headaches, but it is not doing anything, and I am getting ready to come off the Keppra because I cant bear the pain in my head. Anyone have any advice on what other meds may be good for me????Like I said, I have allergies to some meds Lamictal, and Lyrica were the onle other ones I have tried. Please give me some advice.....

My partner was also just diagnosed with primary generalized seizures in November. They put her on 1000mg Keppra XR once a day. At first we thought - no way this drug's side affects are too much - sleeping all the time, zombie, headaches, memory loss - but it turned out 90% of that was due to her coming off some pretty strong anti-depressants.  A month later, with all of the anti-depressants out of her system, we could see that the Keppra was effective but not enough, so they upped her dose to 3000mg a day.  We were scared to have her take so much at first becasue of what we went through on the first round, but the memory loss, zombie effect did not happen this time.  Now she is 2 weeks on the new level and her only complaint is the headaches.  She has determined there are two types - one is the typical migrain that comes along with the seizure activity and that one is fairly controlable with over the counter migrain med - excedrin for migrains.  The other headaches she describes are not helped by the migrain med at all.  She explains it like this - Keppra is a barrier that is keeping her seizures from coming to the surface but the seizure activity in her brain keeps pushing against the barrier and she feels it as an incredible pressure all over her skull.  It seems to make her tired after days of fighting it, which increases the activity in her brain and repeats the cycle all over.  She's going to give it another month to see if she adjusts to it any better.  Having the seizures stopped is a relief and she says she could live with her head in a vice if she had too.  Hang in there and stay balanced is the motto we are living by.
