Is it better to take too much medication or too little medication by accident

Sat, 03/30/2019 - 05:57
Hi everyone, I'm a bit stressed out, I have temporal-lobe epilepsy and I'm on 300mg of epitec (lamotrigien) a day. This morning I can't remember whether I took my medication or not, so would it be safer to just leave it and hope that I took it or take the medication and hope that I didn't take it? Your help is much appreciated, many thanks

Hi Tayla:So if you aren't

Hi Tayla:So if you aren't sure whether you took the meds it's best to go ahead without that particular dose but make sure you follow up on your next dose. My neurologist advised me that, while missing meds may not be in your favor at the same time it is also important to make sure you aren't doubling your dose. So in cases where you might have taken it but you just can't recall it is best to go without it. Just make sure you do follow up on the other schedules. Missing a dose might cause a seizure or seizure-like activity, but it would just be for that day. Doubling your meds and then going back on your regular dose is more probable to have more lengthy effect. After all, meds are not supposed to be increased significantly in a short period because that can also have its own effects. So the short answer is that it is better to take too little by accident. That said, it's something you also want to minimize occurring frequently. And that is were a pillbox comes in. After all, sometimes memory alone won't do the job of guaranteeing you taking your meds and your priority is to make sure you are taking your meds as prescribed. Best Regards

It's good that you came to this site for information.  Another source of support, if you ever have any questions like this is your pharmacist.  They are usually very willing to offer advice.

Thank you so much for you
