Cost of seizure medicatons

Wed, 09/22/2010 - 16:04

Hello all,

I have read many of your posts about the cost of seizure medications and how expensive it can be.  I was wondering if there are no generic seizure medications on the Walmart $4 plan.  Do they not make generic seizure medications?  Do they make them but they are not offered on the plan?  The $4 plan has saved me a lot of money, but I know that everything is not offered on the plan, and not all medications have a generic.

Thanks for your responses.

Carbamazapine is on the $4.00 list.  As of now that is the only one.

Generic Dilantin isn't on the list, but its affordable out of pocket as well.  I had some pretty yucky side effects with it, but it seems to work pretty well for most.

Thanks.  It seems a shame there is only one on the list.

I am not sure what medication you are taking, but if you have a costco around you they have a variety of AED generics at their pharmacy that are significantly cheaper than most drug stores.  You do not need to be a costco member to use their pharmacy either, the AED generics usually range in price, but you can go on their website and check out if they have what you are taking and what the cost would be.  I take generic keppra, and I think for about 100 of the 500 mg pills the cost was about $45.00, which is almost a month supply for the dosage I am on.  Unfortunately costco's AED name brands are still very expensive.  And nothing beats the $4 plan that most pharmacies offer, they just need to add more AED's to that list!  If you cannot afford your medication, get with your doctor or nurse, they have resources so you can get your meds.  For example, the pharma company that makes your med may have a program available to for people who cannot afford their meds or have poor prescription coverage under their current insurance plan.  Check out this website:
