Working as Health Care Provider with Epilepsy

Mon, 02/19/2018 - 17:11
I am 22 years old and I am in college to be a sonographer. I just got my CNA to get some patient hours in while still in school, but I've run into a problem when finding jobs... they find out I have epilepsy. Heres a brief background on my epilepsy, I have had two tonic-clonic seizures and they were 3 months apart. I got diagnosed with epilepsy after my second one at age 19. Since the diagnosis in April 2015 I haven't had a seizure, so going on 3 years now. There were some extreme circumstances around my seizures as well, I was being taken on and off a few medications at the time one of them being a benzo. My doctor was changing my dosage of xanax constantly for a year and on top of that took me off of a med I was on for a long time, that is when I had my seizures. Since then I've been even on my meds (and off of benzo's) and no seizures or abnormal brain activity on EEG. My neurologist has said I am able to work as a health care provider but when it came to writing a letter to the hospital that I got a job offer at she said I couldn't lift more than 15lbs which is a huge problem for my job (and I lift all the time). They took back my job offer. It is very frustrating because I am not sure about my diagnosis of epilepsy and I am almost certain that I will never have one again. I am passionate about the health care field and can't think about anything else I'd do with my life. I'm scared that I will finish my bachelors and never get hired. Any thoughts?

Just try again. And again if you need to. Talk to your doctor about the 15 pounds.
