simple partial seizures

Thu, 07/01/2004 - 14:07
I have just realized that the strange feelings I get every so often are simple partial seizures, they are not anxietyattacks and they are not some psychic gift from above, something I wondered about 20 years ago! I'm 44 and have had them since I was 3 or 4. I sort of enjoyed them then, not so now, they scare me.They are characterized by strong feelings of deja vu They scare me only because I know this is something that is happening in my own mind and is taking precedence over the outside world. I had a closed head injury in 1988 and now I have to take dilantin to control the seizures I'm now prone to (unconscious, wake up with a headache and good for nothing for several days.I don't know why I had my most recent seizure, I fell unconscious for this one despite therapeutic levels of dilantin, and healthy kidney and liver. I'd love to communicate with someone who understands what this is all about. Please don't hesitate to respond.

Dear Metro,I can totaly relate to what you are feeling I am going to be 30 in June and just found out about 6 months ago that i have epilepsy consisting of complex partial seizures sometimes followed by grand mals but these only happen at night in my sleep. But just last month i finally found out that i also suffer from simple partial seizures whitch accure anytime day or night and offten accure several in one day when they do and can be very scary. Like you I have been having seizures for many years but had no idea for about 17 years or sobut because the other seizures happen while i sleep i didn't know and with the simple partial seizures I also thought I was having Panic attacks. It actually took my new Nero. to diagnose the simple partial seizures I know when they are coming on and that is great and all but it's the after affects that I hate. sometimes I am very confussed and forget things the the worst was one day when my sister had my 2 year old daughter so i could get some things done around the house I had three seizures that day and instead of letting someone know or calling my siter to check up like i normaly would i just went about my business the best i could by the third seizure i had forgoten where my daughter was and lost it running to my neighbors screaming i can't find my baby the poliece were called and everything thank god my sister had called about 20 minutes later, my husband had to come home from work and it wad bad. I have forgoten many things like turning off the stove when i am done cooking. Now my family and friends know if they don't hear from me they call me just to check up. I am on Topamax 200 mg twice a day and tegretol rx 400 mg at bed time it seems to be helping but i still have my days and if i wake up with a headach I call my sister or my dad first thing and stay with one of them while my husband is working becuase i know the day isn't going to go well. I you would like to talk more you can email me any time picnupthepcs2@yahoo.com.I have posted many times on the board and it has helped to have a place to go.Trust me you are not alone.I thought I was alone when I first found out exspecialy finding out that I have had this for so long and didn't know it made no sence to me. I though the Dr's. were crazy. I also know that even after all the tests that they put us through sometimes nothing shows up. I went throught eeg's several times and ct scans for other things in my life and nothing ever showed up on then so nobody knew it wasn't untill I complained about the simple partial seizures that they ran more exstensive tests and that isn't even what I thought was wrong I thought I was having sugar problems. I hope I could be of some help.Stay safe and keep your head up.Cindy

HiI also suffer from simple partial seizures...I just went for my first visiti to a neurologist in 30 years.. :( Not a happy camper to say the least, I was 6 years old the last time I had a simple partial seizure but I was unable to walk for 2 or 3 weeks...my seizures start out as tingling in my face and numbess around my mouth all on the left side...I thought it was jsut anxiety attacks like yourself...after the numbeness subsides I have a strange sensation in my left extremities... I cant explain the feeling its almost like knowing they are there, we all walk around and never think of our body parts but during those times I feel the lower half of my left leg from the knee down and the lower part of my left arm...The reason I am certain the epilepsy is bck, like it ever left, is because they are preceded by several days of bad migraines...in the last 2 weeks I've had about 4 of them and the symptoms last for 2 to 3 hrs....I wish you luck I wish there was something that I could say to help....

Hi. I am beginning to wonder if I am having this type of seizure. The doctors really don't know what is wrong with me. One neurologist witnessed a seizure and said it was "complex partial". I usually have them in my sleep, but if I have alot at night they continue through the day. When I am awake I feel them coming ard will scream and find something to bite. People always want me to tell them what it feels like. I can't describe it, I just know it is going to happen. Now I am getting that feeling while awake, but I do not go into a seizure. My jaw clenches. The top half of my body shakes. After a few seconds it is over. This can happen many times in a day, especially if I have had a seizure the night before. If anyone can relate to what I have described please respond. thanks, Stacey.
