Seizures after taking the Depo-provera shot

Tue, 04/21/2009 - 23:50
Hi I took 1 Depo-provera shot and did not get my period for a year. Then when I finally got my period I also started having seizures. Has anyone else had same or similar problems?

I have been on Depo for half a year and noticed that my seizures actually stopped while I was on Depo. I never fully stopped my periods...not yet. My Dr. says I will. I had asked if I should change because I didn't like the constant spotting. He told me that Depo is actually helpful in preventing seizures and, if I stopped, the return of my normal periods could trigger my old seizure pattern. When I asked why, he said that it was because Estrogen weakens seizure immunity and progesterone actually strengthens the system against seizures. While it doesn't prevent them, it certainly doesn't hurt anything. My guess is that, with your period starting again, your estrogen levels are nearing normal and causing a risk for seizures again. At least, that is according to my doctor. Don't know if that helps, but it is what I found out today.

Hi! Just happened onto this thread. Wondering if you mind sharing how things are going now as I noticed this post is quite old. I am 35 and started having seizures in May of this year. Noticed by the 3rd month that they were happening in line with my ovulation. After having my General Practioner and a Neurologist tell me I don't have seizures, I started researching on my own and found a Gynecologist who agreed to let me try taking Depo Provera to stop ovulation. This past weekend I should have had a seizure and didn't. But tonight I had a small aura. Anyway, I am so frustrated with the lack of information out there and how difficult it is to find a doctor to help and when I saw this post it peaked my interest. Thanks for your time. Jennifer Raye

I got my period while it the hospital after my last two incidents (the last one did not go all the way to convulsions). I mentioned this to my GP and she told me the same thing that  Almalibra said (Sorry I'm about 3 yrs late to this party). She said that she would like to use Depo, but the risk was that if I couldn't handle birth control, I was stuck with it for 3 months. She first put me on the progestrone only "mini" pill and I had no auras or anything, but I bled for about half of the time. So she did put me on the Depo and things have improved significantly.

Another benefit is that with my insurance plan it is significantly cheaper/year out of pocket. 4 office visits @ $20= 80 + 4 perscriptions @ $40 = 160  which comes to $240. Vs 1 office visit @ $20 =$20 + 12 percsriptions (actually 13 because they only come in packs of 28) @ 40= 480 ($520) comes to at least $500.
