Unsure of my EEG test results

Tue, 10/17/2017 - 23:47
I got a call from my doctor’s office after having a 72 hour at home eeg. I didn’t have a seizure while having the test, only some eye rolling. I got a call a few days later saying that my eeg showed I was at risk for a seizure and I needed to start taking an anticonvulsant called keppra. It wasn’t my neurologist on the phone but someone else from the office. They said in December I’d actually have to have another eeg. I’m wondering if anyone else has or known someone that has gotten similar results? I’m confused more as why she would give me medication for this as of now? I see her November 1st but I just wanted to see if anyone had any input?

There are seizure related

There are seizure related discharges that can be seen on some people’s EEGs. When one’s history is consistent with seizures and they see those, they’ll usually (these days) recommend starting medication. Odds are that the person relating the results was relaying the results in non medical terms that left you with more questions. You can get a copy of the report. You should get an appt for getting your questions answered if you need that. At the very least before starting meds, you should have some idea of what the med options are, what the process is, how to communicate with your doc’s office to get med adjustments or report troublesome side effects. Ideally you have some idea of what types of seizures you are having, how to record them and how to recognize your seizure triggers. Our child’s first EEG was clear and a second (longer and sleep deprived) EEG had spikes consistent with partial seizures.
