Topamax and Pregnancy

Thu, 12/02/2004 - 16:40

My daughter has been on Topamax (400ml daily) to control her seizures for 5 years.  She is pregnant (9 weeks), has anyone gone thru a pregnancy while taking Topamax?  Her Neurologist at UCLA seems to think that it will be fine.  She does have to have blood tests often to keep her levels normal.  She does work full time and my concern is how long will she be able to keep working, I am very concerned that she could have a seizure do to her body changing.  Are c-sections the norm for women with epilepsy?  SO many questions...I have listed them all down and we will be seeing the Dr again in 2 weeks.  If anyone has info please post, thank you!

hi, i don't have personal experience with topomax, but i did have 3 children while taking an older AED. my kids are wonderful, bright and energetic teens now. i had no problems during pregnancy and they were all very healthy babies. is someone saying your daughter will need a c-section because she has epilepsy? i've never heard of that. the expert on women and epilepsy is widely considered to be dr. mark yerby. http://www.seizures.net/i like martha morrell as well. http://www.aafp.org/afp/20021015/1489.htmland check the links on this site as well.

Hi.

Writing down all questions you may have and then taking  them to appointments with your health practitioner for clarification should help.Don't be scared to ask questions regarding side effects of treatments, your medications ,any concerns you may have.

If your practitioner doesn't explain something to you or if you are just confused about something, please, don't be afraid to ask for explanations for your daughter.

Your practitioner should clarify all the risks involved for procedures and answer any questions regarding potential side effects of medications and why tests are being ordered. This link might help.

Does anyone out there know of problems with both Depakote ER  and Topamax during pregnancy?  My husband and I want to have a baby sometime in the next year or so and if there are too many problems with these drugs I want to try to change them now to a safer med.  I'm already on alot of the folic acid that they tell you about etc.. its just the medications I am scared about... You always hear the worst when doing research...

Thanks in advance...

JoAnne
