Vertiginous Epilepsy?

Wed, 12/20/2017 - 08:23
Hello, I'm new to this forum and was wondering if anyone could give me their experiences regarding vertigo and epilepsy. For the last couple of years I've had 'episodes' of extreme vertigo lasting a few seconds, 'quick spins' which seems to come on with no warning. They have happened when I was a child one or twice and seem to last for about a week, several spins a day and occasionally 1 spin at random. They have had about 5 occurrences of it in about 2/3 years. They come with extreme panic and dr/ds although I also have bad anxiety connected to this and often experience some ds and anxiety anyway. I'm certain the vertigo is not only anxiety based and as the Doctors don't seem to concerned the only thing I've been able to find that sounds similar is vertiginous epilepsy which I know is very rare and frustratingly there is very little on it online. If this sounds familiar to anyone I would be interested to hear! Many thanks.

WelcomeVertiginous epilepsy has also been referred to as Epileptic vertigo, Vestibular epilepsy, Vestibular seizures, and Vestibulogenic seizures in different cases, but vertiginous epilepsy is the preferred term.WIKI does bring up information that is interesting. You may want to be referred to a neurologist that specifies in epilepsy for an appointment. If they have come back and are getting more frequent then you need to have it looked at. While epilepsy is commonly accompanied by dizziness or vertigo, vertigo is only rarely caused by epilepsy. This arises primarily because vertigo is much more commonly caused by ear conditions. Epileptic vertigo is due to brain injury, typically the part of the temporal lobe that processes vestibular signals.  So it could be seizures that have increased in numbers My epilepsy is not Vertiginous epilepsy. But my epilepsy is caused by scared brain tissue which was from a blow to my head when I was 6-8 yoa. I researched this/ I hope this helps Joe

Symptoms of dizziness, spinning sensations and similar feelings can be part of or caused by seizure activity in the brain. The only way to know for sure is to have EEG testing to record seizures when they happen. If that hasn't been done, consider an appointment at a comprehensive epilepsy center - here is a link to read about...https://www.epilepsy.com/learn/about-epilepsy-basics/what-happens-during-seizurehttps://www.epilepsy.com/learn/refractory-epilepsy-difficult-treat-seizures/comprehensive-epilepsy-center
