Just Diagnosed with having Seizures

Fri, 08/18/2017 - 20:34
I'm 44 years old and last week, I had what the doctor and my husband told me was a seizure. In the matter of 10 minutes, they put me in the MRI tube, they took my license for 6 months, and I'm on anticonvulsant medication. While I know I'm not the only person who suffers from this or has had this news dropped on them, I feel completely lost and confused. I'm generally the person who takes care of things, is running from A to B with the family, and now I'm subject to being cared for and cannot control what is happening. Any tips on dealing with the initial news and moving forward as usual? I'm fully aware that this is not the end of the world and this could be something far worse, like a terminal illness, etc. Just looking to talk to others going through a similiar situation for support. Also, does anyone with epilepsy ever dealt with facial numbness? I have this almost all of the time. Thank you

I am 41 and was diagnosed

I am 41 and was diagnosed almost 5 years ago. I was also told by my husband and doctor that I had a seizure when I woke up in the ER.  It has been a rough road from having my license suspended etc. It was debilitating. I dont like asking people to do things. My independence was and has been compromised. I had Grand mal seizures but they have since changed to Simple Partial. I have experienced facial numbness at various times that last a while. My advice would be to keep a seizure diary,  try to identify your triggers,  mine happens to be stress,  see if they are more prevalent around your cycle, arm yourself with knowledge about the type of seizures you are having. As for coping, I honestly cried nearly every day. I keep a journal, try to meditate, try to find a local support group. Stay encouraged.

Yes, facial numbness, eye liddroopiness etc. it will go away, but do tell your doctor.Your feelings are completely understandable. You are entitled to your feelings. As far as tips, just know that epilepsy disorders are treatable. Also you will get used to the new normal and move on with your life in due time. Right now it is simply the time to go throw your motions of absorbing what is going on, and eventually accept and adapt. You can get through this, we all have.

I know just how you feel

I know just how you feel tsapos.  My first seizure was a month ago.  We were on a working vacation 1500 miles from furnishing our little snowbird nest and we were in the Home Depot.  The only thing I remember for the next 48 hours is having seen bright lights and thinking something might be wrong.  When I came to the tale I heard sounded quite unbelievable except it WAS two days later.  I literally have finally just accepted it all.  It will come.  And you probably should tell your Dr. about the numbness.  Good luck to us all!
