Am I Having Seizures?

Sat, 02/22/2020 - 05:00
Sometimes at night I'll wake up feeling weird. It feels like im so tired that I can't keep my eyes open and I usually just try to go back to sleep. Then I'll start to drift off, but my body will go completely numb and I wont be able to feel or move it at all, but I'm still awake. So then I'm awake, cant move, and it feels like a rope is attached to my brain at both ends and its being jerked back and forth. Basically aggressively shifting from asleep to awake but still not able to move. Thats when sometimes I'll start to hear things, mostly talking or voices. Sometimes my legs and arms will start to shake. It takes a while before im able to get control of my body again and it's extremely terrifying. Ive read that epilepsy can sometimes be genetic, and I'm worried because my older sister has epilepsy but she was diagnosed when she was a kid. So am I having seizures or is something else going on? I really need help, it happened about an hour ago and im too scared to try and sleep.

The only way to know for sure

The only way to know for sure with absolute certainty is to go get an EEG or to have a seizure while wearing an EEG, as during a VEEG study. No one here can tell you one way or another. Talk to your doc.

Hi, Thank you for posting and we understand this must be very confusing and upsetting to experience.  As Folken mentioned in their comment below, we cannot determine if you’ve been having seizures or not. It's important that you’re following-up with your healthcare team to discuss these episodes you've been experiencing further and if you experience any changes in symptoms, moods or behaviors. Documenting these episodes, you’ve experienced in detail like you done in your post and providing a thorough family history (if possible), will be very helpful to review with your healthcare team. My Seizure Diary: https://www.epilepsy.com/living-epilepsy/epilepsy-foundation-my-seizure-diary ,is a great tool for tracking these episodes you’ve experienced, setting reminders, managing medications, recording medical history, moods, behaviors, triggers, and other personal experiences, that may affect wellness, which can be shared with your healthcare team. Additionally, you may always contact our 24/7 Helpline, where trained information specialists are available to answer your questions, offer help, hope, support, guidance, and access to national and local resources. 1-800-332-1000, or contactus@efa.org. epilepsy.com/helpline
