Worried gf, stubborn bf! 1st Time seizure

Wed, 02/07/2018 - 23:45
So my boyfriend/father of our almost 3 month old baby, had a seizure for the first time yesterday. He had it early in the morning around 8:15 (the time he usually gets up everyday) I’m guessing as he was awaking. It woke me out of my sleep. He’s 28. Not sure the name of the kind of seizure he had but it was bad. Very violent convulsions, seemed as if he was gasping for breath at first, scared me to death didn’t know what it was at first. I honestly thought he was dying on me. he bit his tongue bad, jaws locked up, was spitting out blood bc of how hard he bit down on his tongue & he suffered complete memory loss of when and what happened. When he came to, he was very confused & angry/frustrated when I told him he had a seizure & paramedics were on the way. He thought I had lost my mind. It wasn’t until the paramedics asked him simple questions and he couldn’t. answer them all that he realized something really was wrong. We went to the ER..CT scan and blood work all came back perfect. No known reason what caused it. We think maybe the smoothies he drinks from smoothie king is one possible cause..bc of the muscle builder enhancer he always gets which has amino acids in it that from what i read, can trigger seizures if you have too much of it. He drinks them like 3-5x out the week for half a year now. Anyway, dr recommended he follows up with the neurologist in about 3-4 days. My problems is that the dr also stated that he can just go on about his day as usual, no special precautions, no “get some rest” ..she just advised him to stop smoking marijuana. But the fact that this is his first time, we don’t know if this will happen again...I’m scared to leave him alone, I’m scared for him to drive but he’s so stubborn and thinks bc he feels fine and it probably won’t haopen again..it’s like he doesn’t want to listen to me. He doesn’t even really want to go to the neurologist bc for one we don’t have insurance, no telling how much the visit will cost let alone medicine..then two, he’s scared they’ll put him on something that’ll be worse for his health. I just don’t know what to do. I know he’s lowkey stressed about it bc he doesn’t like talking about it but it all just worries me! I don’t want him to be driving and randomly has one that could cost him his life and someone else’s. Any advice?? I’ve done so much research on this stuff and i still don’t know the likeliness of this ever happening again..or what really caused it..idk if I’ll be able to make him go see a neurologist or even have the money for us to go. Any tips on what he can look for like signs that he might have one again??

Thanks joe for responding with that information. It’s very helpful. I did forget to mention that he said a few-3 yrs ago when he was staying with his mom, that he called her one day asking her about what happened that day and yesterday bc for some reason he couldn’t remember anything and didn’t know why. He said he didn’t feel any different and no injuries so I’m wondering if maybe he’s already had a seizure(s) and just doesn’t know it yet. At that time though he didn’t drink the smoothies like that. It wasn’t until halfway thru my pregnancy up until now that he drinks them. He always gets the large size too. He did lighten up on them at some point but lately he had been drinking them. So maybe that could be the sole cause. He doesn’t drink heavy..at one point he had stopped drinking up until my pregnancy...he start having a 1-2 beer everyday. Sometimes not finishing them. Only other thing I can think of which I’m not sure if it has anything to do with seizures, but i notice he snores a lot and louder these days. He wasn’t doing that before. He would snore every now and then but very lightly. Now it’s every night, kinda loud and sometines his breathing seems a little fast when he’s sleep at night. Oh also he had mentioned the night before how hot he was and when he went into his seizure he was ver sweaty, he thinks maybe he could have overheated? Idk...but with going on about his day, I’m just scared for him to drive bc the chance of him having one. Or do ppl who have seizures typically have them at a certain time of day? Like he had his at the time he wakes up when I’m guessing he was trying to wake up. He does seem more tired too and it’s two days after he had one. Normal? Anyway I called around for insurance and a neurologist. He’s agreed to go thankfully so I’ve found a dr just have to go ahead and pay for this insurance ASAP. Do they try to put u on meds after the 1st seizure? How many seizures have u had since you’ve been put on meds??

check out common triggers for

check out common triggers for those with seizures (search this site), includes illness, lack of sleep and stress. dietary triggers occur for some people. certain other lifestyle choices can lower seizure thresholds like drugs or alcohol. poor sleep and stress can easily happen for new parents. apnea is more prevalent in epilepsy patients than in the general population and worth getting checked out as apnea patients often have seizures that aren’t controlled with medication until the apnea is treated. all complicated by no insurance, that’s a priority since it’s quite possible this isn’t an isolated seizure given the earlier episode.
