epilepsy and twitching

Tue, 09/28/2010 - 17:55
Hi, My boyfriend is a healthy 26 year old and he had a grand mal seizure back in February 2010. They did all the test, ran the EEG and MRI, and CAT scan and everything. At first they said that it's impossible that he has epilepsy because of his age and family background. No one in his family has a history of epilepsy and he's perfectly healthy. At the time though, he was lacking sleep and not eating properly since I had left to Toronto for a week. When i came back and we went to bed he had the seizure. He was acting really really weird when I went home, and kept running his right hand under water because he felt weird. He didn't eat at all that day and didn't even want me to cook when I got home. He was out of character completely. We went to bed and I woke up at aroung 330am and he was looking at his arm with the scariest face I've ever seen and started having the seizure and his whole body was convulsing. It lasted for a good 5-8 mins about. the ambulance came and he was completely disorientated. We brought him to the hospital and they gave him some drugs to calm him down because they initially thought he was having a fit because he was black and they thought he was on drugs. they gave him some anti pyschotic pill and then they gave him tegretol the next day as requested by his doctor. They ran tests eeg, cat scan, mri, even lumbar puncture because at the time they didn't believe it was epilepsy. The first EEG scan came back normal and then they did another one for some reason and then they said that there was abnormal activity in his brain but no seizures manifested itself. But that's discounting the fact that they gave him tegretol and he was still recuperating from the first seizure. We went home after 3 days in the hospital and he did not take the medication because we wanted a second opinion. We're still waiting for an appointment He had another seizure recently in September 2010 a little over two weeks ago. We went out on a Saturday, he didn't drink much. When we went home around 2am he fell asleep by 3 and the next day he was still sleeping when around 430pm he had a seizure. i was in the living room at the time and I heard him make a weird noise so I ran to the room to find him starting his convulsions. It lasted about 3-4 minutes followed by disorientation and he even tried to stand up after only he was wobbling so i had to struggle with him back to the bed. the ambulance came and once at the hospital they did the usual tests and he was very out of it at the time. While he was in the emergency I stayed with him and they were monitoring him for 24hours. I was there when one moment he looked at his hand and started smacking his teeth together and he wasn't responsive when I was talking to him. That lasted a couple of minutes and then he was back and couldn't remember what he just did. So they gave him an anti seizure medicine that lasts for 24 hours to help prevent another seizure. The doctor explained that it's after shocks that it's normal for him to behave that way and to take precaution they are going to give him this 24hr anti seizure medicine given to him by IV. He fell asleep after that and I went home. The next day they let him go and we are scheduled to go back on the 8th of October for another EEG. He is constantly twithcing at night. He shakes his head and his whole body shakes too. Last night he kept doing it like 6-7 times a minute for about 8-10 minutes. Then he will twitch throughout the night. He also smacks his teeth together. I'm so worried about him. We're confused about his diagnosis because they were telling us it's not epilepsy and then told us it is because they couldnt' find out what happened to him. I know it's a long story and it is my first time writing here. I would appreciate any words of encouragement. Also let me know what you guys think about this, back in October 2009 my bf was a victim of racial profiling and was attacked by cops and had his head banged on the floor outside. The doctors say there is a possibility that head trauma can be responsible for this sudden epilepsy. Thanks

I'm sorry to hear what your boyfriend has been going through. I've had epilepsy for 10 years. I know how hard it is to wake up one day and start having seizures without knowing why or how it happened. I was perfectly healthy & have no family history of it. I took every single test. All the results came back normal. I kept having seizures. I have complex partial seizures, I blank out for a few minutes with no memory of it happening. As time went by my neurologist did find abnormal brain activity.

As from what I read, it sounds like he does have epilepsy. Right now it's important for him to see a neurologist regularly. If you don't get a good opinion from his doctor, then check out another neurologist. That's what I did. He needs to take care of himself and be strong. It's a great thing that he has you to help him do that =)

I hope things get better for him, and you. Gob bless!
