do i have legitimate epilepsy or did i just party too much?

or maybe i'm in denial. but, the two times i've had a seizure i was partying a lot at the time. from what i've read they don't directly corrolate cocaine use and seizures, though lack of sleep seems to bring them about... so, if i was doing coke, not sleeping much, waking up early, working long days, and then partying again... couldn't that have caused seizures? my eeg showed abnormal readings in my left temporal lobe. but i've heard that some people have readings like that without being epileptic, just like some with epilepsy have negative readings. maybe it's a stretch, but i've only had two seizures. after the first i stopped doing drugs and drinking so much. i decided to stop taking my meds after a few years. i did better in school, got back into shape, graduated, moved out west, started working fulltime, etc... things were good. i did sort of get into the l.a. party scene a bit too much, and drank and did cocaine occasionally. i had been off my meds for 9 months, seizure free. then i got struck down one morning at my apt, before my drive to work. i regained consciousness when i was halfway to work (had been driving for 15 minutes or so in autopilot). i always wonder if my 'condition' is the result of bad decisions. if i don't have a seizure for 9 months off meds and live an unhealthy and dangerous lifestyle, how long could i go living well like i do now, off meds? like i said, i'm perfectly willing to admit that i'm just in denial. but i'd like to know what others think. is anyone else in a similar situation?

The truth is that everybody has a seizure threshold.  You're seems to be reduced by certain factors, a fast lifestyle, and drugs & alcohol.  Alcohol lowers your threshold when it begins to leave your body.  Cocaine stimulates your CNS and could potentially trigger a seizure.  Coffee can too!

I stopped taking my Dilantin after 5 years of seizure free nights.  I lived a very decent lifesyle and still ended up having a seizure and returned to my meds.  The question you have to ask yourself is, what kind of life do you want to live?  If you want to party, you're going to have to know that you're putting yourself at risk for seizures.   Also, once you've had seizures, it's likely that you're have them again, drug-free or not.

I personally chose to clean up my life and focus on my education and family life.  But, the choice is always yours!

Cheers, Andrew

My finance has had two seizures in the past four months.  He has never had anything like this before.  He is 26 and is healthy.  He occasionally drinks socially and has a job that requires shift changes, which often leads to lack of sleep.  Since his second seizure, we have been worried about why it happened again. He takes his meds on time, but he was drinking the day he had the second one.  He drank two beers (which he drinks occasionally) and two Jack and cokes. So, he wasn't drunk at all.

We know alcohol is not good if you have seizures but drinking beer moderately never was a problem.  Has anyone had a problem with hard alcohol like Jack?  We think lack of sleep might have contributed too.

I drank and smoked weed in my late teens until I was in my mid-twenties. I had never had a seizure until my early thirties. I had since stopped drinking and smoking. I had not touched a thing in years when I had my first seizure. I wasn't a heavy drinker or smoker, and just went out on weekends with friends, had a few beers, and smoked if it was around which wasn't often. I haven't touched a drink since my first seizure. I live in Las Vegas, and wherever you go, the first drink is usually free. They don't want you're money at the bar here, they want it in the machines or on the tables. I don't drink or smoke these days, because I just want to eliminate both as seizure triggers. I do smoke cigarettes, but with the recent tax hike on them, I'm not going to be able to afford them for very long.
