Depakote

Wed, 01/13/2010 - 11:36
My son started having seisures at age 20.  He is now 29.  He was on dilantin  which controlled his seisures.   He started having seisures 3 months ago about one a month. He will lose his job if he has too many more seisures at work.  His Dr. put him on Depakote  and slowling getting him off dilantin.  He has been having seisures still.  He sees his Neurologist friday.  I think he needs to be off the depakote and back on dilantin and maybe some other seisure meds.  Any suggestions?

I don't think he will lose his job if he has too many seizures. That would be wrongfull dismisal and discrimination. He might negotiate other less dangerous duties with his boss.

As for the idea of going back to dilantin from depakote, it is a tough choice. Did dilantin give him bleeding gums? If so, there might be another trip to a seizure investigation unit to find another medication. The ultimate goal should be seizure freedom with as few medications and side-effects as possible.I realise this letter is getting to you after your son's visit with the neurologist, but I am speaking as a person who has gone from dilatin to depakene to carbamazepine. I have been seizure free for a number of years (I think it's 6). All the best!
