Sex Drive

Mon, 12/20/2004 - 10:21

Hi all,

I have suffered from Grand Mal seizures since my mid teens, and have been on Epilim Chrono (when I lived in the UK) and more recently, Valproic Acid in Canada.

I have noticed a huge drop in my libido and am concerned as to wether it may be the medication.

Does anyone else out there have any knowledge or experience of this?

Thanks,

James

Hello James...

Lee here.  This isn't a gender issue either - it affects us gals too.  My seizures have been controlled since 1975 - but I was a practicing alcoholic and addict until 1983.  So long as I had the booze and other drugs I could do anything (and succeed in forgetting most of it).  After getting sober and straight I definately lost not only interest but willingness to have or participate in sex.

I thought something was wrong with me - then that our marriage was destined to fail without it.....these were just old beliefs passed down from other generations.  I wanted to want it again but just never felt like I wanted to do it - that is two different things you know.  Wanting to want and wanting to do.....

Never made the connection to E or my meds until after spending a couple years in family counciling.  That did succeed in restoring the desire for intimacy in my marriage but sex is still not happening.  We have learned to enjoy the intimacy and not dwell on what it doesn't lead to.  Quite frankly - snuggling in front of the fireplace while watching a movie or something feels far more fullfilling then the physical acts did anyway.  I feel more connected now then when we were sexually active.....but that may be a gender thing.

Hope you find peace for yourself and an answer that works for you.  Thanks for asking the question.  It reminded me of another blessing I needed to count.

Later................Lee
