Lowering Depakote dosage--any thoughts?

Mon, 11/29/2004 - 00:36
Hi.I am a 41 year old woman; I have been taking Depakote (1000 mg/day) since I was (approx.) 23 years old and my seizures have been very well controlled since then. I now have them VERY infrequently (none in the last year, knock on wood) and in the past they generally happened at night although there were a few exceptions. Just for background: I had my first seizure when I was 13; they are grand mal. I initially was on phenobarbitol but this didn't control them very well so I went on Dilantin. I had problems with facial hair and gum overgrowth so I switched to Depakote. Although, I have been happy with Depakote, I am now thinking about trying to lower my dosage. I have had some of the side effects from the drug: some hair loss and texture change (not a huge deal but I feel as if it's coming out more now and I'd rather have more than less) and -- perhaps more importantly -- I have always struggled with depression and concentration issues. Additionally, I recently had a bone density test (DEXA) and I have osteopoenia (not osteoporosis, just want to clarify) so that is additional motivation. Also, I would prefer to be taking less of a drug unless it is necessary to take more (statement of the obvious). I am wondering if anyone out there could tell me about their experiences with lowering their Depakote dosages especially if their situation is similar to mine. I will, of course, discuss this with my doctor but I am interested in hearing about what has happened to other folks (most importantly: did your seizures increase? did any of the side effects diminish or go away? any other important info?) I have always been very conservative about changing my medication since the seizures have been under control but I also feel as if my quality of life could possibly be improved by a slight dosage change. Sorry for this wordy e-mail! I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks,Ellen

I didn't realize that

I didn't realize that depakote caused bone loss.  I hav e been taking depakote for 30 years and I  gained 40 pounds and have worked hard to lose it.  i lost some hair as well and continue to have a tremor.  But my seizure control has been very good.  Valproate can also cause gum bleeding and slow blood clotting.
