Depakote ER to Topomax

Sat, 11/18/2006 - 11:00
Hello! I am new to this website. I am 24 years old and I have had epilepsy for about 12-13 years. I had my first grand mal seizure when I was 12. Before that, I was constantly having petit mals seizures. I have been seizure free for about 7 years. As far as I can remember I have been on 750 mg of Depakote ER mg a day. In a couple of years, my husband and I would like to start a family and we both know being on Depakote ER is the worst thing to do. My neuro wanted to see if I was ready to come off my meds by gradually weaning me off, but when we got down to 250 mg of Depakote ER a day, I started having petit mal seizures again. So my doctor has started me to move from Depakote ER to Topomax. Last night, I took my first 25 mg of topomax along with 250 mg of Depakote ER. In about a week, I will double the dosage of Topomax to 50 mg per day and then the 3rd week I will have double it again to 100 mg of Topomax a day. The Fourth week, my doctor then wants me off Depakote ER and just on Topomax alone. I was wondering if anyone else has done this or if they are currently taking Topomax and they have grand mal/petit mal seizures that are now controlled by Topomax alone. Any information would be helpful? Thanks!
