Lamotrigine Not Working

Wed, 04/24/2019 - 21:02
I have juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. So my neuro thought I grew out of JME so I went off my meds... fast forward months later I have a grand mal so my doctor puts me on roughly 150-250 mg of lamotrigine and I still end up having seizures on it... When I saw him later about this, he tripled my dose hoping that it would kick up the effects since maybe the dose I had was just too low. Anyways, at 500mg per day, I'm still having seizures. Especially on my period may I add, for instance when I got my last period nearly a month ago, I had 20 consecutive drop seizures that morning. That and yet I still continue to have seizures regardless of whether I'm on my period or not. Wanted to share in case anybody is experiencing something similar taking lamotrigine. After all, I'm pretty skeptical that on such a high dose of this anticonvulsant I'm still having seizures. I'm open to any feedback or comments, thanks

Hi there,Gees, your going

Hi there,Gees, your going through a tough time. Hang in there. I've been on lamotrigine for over 10 years and when I first took it in combination with phenytoin my epilepsy was under control. Then I suffered a bout of depression and was put on another medication and the interaction of that drug with the two anti-convulsants, reduced their benefits and I had a seizure and crashed my car. After that my neurologist gave me an additional drug which countered the impact of the anti-depressant. That drug was Keppra and after a few months my seizures stopped. So I take Keppra twice a day morning and night along with lamotrigine and phenytoin. I also take vitamin B and Fish Oil in the morning. The vitamin B helps deal with the side effect I get from the Keppra. It can cause excessive anger and the VItamin B helps alleviate stress so I take a good dose of that.So if you are taking any other drugs this could be limiting the effect of the lamotrigine and a good dose of keppra might help you. All the bestJane

When I was on Lamotrigine

When I was on Lamotrigine alone, I was in the ER twice in 10 days. My doctor had to add another pill to make it work better. I'm taking extended release and 600mg/day and Lamotrigine still does not work by itself.

I also have juvenile

I also have juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and I also take Lamotrigine, always took for about 2 years, and I had a big seizure one day, and until then I had taken 50mg a day, and they doubled my dose to 100mg a day.Now I'm with 100mg a day and have a minimum amount of seizures a day (some days without seizures at all).Maybe the doctor gave you too much dose.
