Epilepsy and EHCP at school

Tue, 03/06/2018 - 14:25
Hi my daughter who is just 10 was diagnosed in september 2016 with Epilepsy. She had a grand mal seizure which scared the life out of us as. From talking with the specialists it transpired that the monthly episodes she was having prior to her seizure where she would appear in the night, vomit then go back to sleep and be fine were actually seizures. She hasn’t had any ‘big’ seizures since starting on Lamotrigine but does have seizures in bed often, involving shaking and making odd noises. Her primary school has been really good and she has a care plan in place - my concern is when she goes to Secondary school next year which is worrying me. She currently isn’t allowed around the school on her own and always takes 2 children to the toilet with her, has her own teaching assistant when she goes swimming just to watch her etc. I know this won’t be as easy in secondary school as they have more freedom. She also will not be able to get the bus to and from school and her seizures are still uncontrolled so could happen at any time. I have been told to try and get an EHCP plan in place as it is legally binding that her condition is made aware to everyone who teaches her and will hopefully keep her safe around the new much larger school. It will also allow me to choose a school 5 mins away from my work so that I can drive her to and from school and be in hand in minutes if anything happens. She also has cousins at this particular school so will have a support network should anything happen - does anyone else have a EHCP plan for their son/daughter with Epilepsy? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Are you in the UK? I don't

Are you in the UK? I don't know how many readers from outside the US follow this web site but it really sounds like you are outside the Epilepsy Foundation's reach. The assistance you describe sounds amazing. If there's a web site for your country on the order of wrightslaw here, maybe there is documentation about the process ins and outs.

It does sound like something

It does sound like something that should be looked at. In order to find out more you might want to call the 24/7 help line since the foundation covers a lot of the world and we do have people from other nations posting in here. The number to call in order to get info would be 1-800-332-1000
