what is a seizure disorder???

Sat, 09/04/2004 - 11:21

I do not have any idea what is wrong with me.  I have a seizure disorder.  When I look that up it is put together with epilepsy.  When I read about epilepsy it all fits.
Recurring seizures after head injury.  I have at least 50 a year.  Complex partial and grand mal.
They put me on dilantin.  It helps.  All tests come up normal.

For some reason I got a medic alert bracelet.  Registration number.  Not one of the cheap things you buy in the store.  A doctor Must have said something to me, but I can't remember.  I don't think that I would just get one for the fun of it.  Without an actual diagnosis I don't know what to do.
Does anyone know how many types of seizure disorders there are that are non-epileptic?? I don't want to say I have something that I don't.  If anyone out there knows please tell me.

Hi.

I read your post and sympathise.I myself was first diagnosed with diabetes, then afterwards I developed epilepsy-how,does not matter right now.I'm just thankful a friend nagged at me not to settle for what  the diagnosis was I had been given.

If you read the extract you will see that other medical conditions can mimic epilepsy seizures.

It's your diagnosis that matters here.

If you read this brief extract,it may help.

My own thoughts on this are to get yoursef checked out again,or talk to your med specialist who prescribed your treatment plan and discuss just how you feel about this. From the sounds of your post that's pretty bewildered and no wonder right now.

Did you experience any unusual symptoms beforehand e.g. nausea, dizziness, chest pain? (This is to rule out medical problems that could be confused with epilepsy such as heart problems, migraine, panic attacks or fainting.)

Had you drunk any alcohol or taken any drugs of any kind?
Did you have any warning beforehand? If so, what?

Do you remember anything about the seizure? If not, what happened when you came round?

Did you fall over and/or injure yourself?

Were there any symptoms after the attack e.g. numbness or weakness?

How many seizures have you had?

Are there any other factors which could suggest epilepsy e.g. head injury, previous seizures, other people in your family with epilepsy?

I guess that I did not give enough information. Sorry.

I had a car accident.  My head smashed the windshield.
This was 13 years ago.  I had episodes in my sleep.  They progressed to
while I was awake.  I could feel them coming 50% of the time.

I ran into things, fell, shook, talked nonsense, bit my tounge, lip, inside of my mouth.
I would sleep most of the next day.  This happened when it wanted to.
I cannot recall how often.  2-3 times a week.

9 years ago a neurologist witnessed this.  Stated it was a complex partial seizure.  Started me on tegretol.  I remember no more about that.

3 and a half years ago I went into multiple seizures.  They started me on dilantin.  It helped.  I still have 50 seizures a year.  This month I had 6 in one night.

I have been told that I have a seizure disorder, but no-one has ever said that I have epilepsy.  When I look up seizure disorder I get epilepsy.

Thanks for your reply.  I am trying to get a doctor, but I have to wait.  It is up to them not me.  Thank you again.

Please ?

No apology needed,it's tough right now,I'm sure we all realise that. I just hope that you get into see someone soon about this ...Check this list out....

Huge, I realise, but it tells you why it was throwing up the info it was at you.It sounds to me as if you just want this diagnosis confirming, and the confusion clearing up of what from reading  through your post is clear cut descriptions of seizures .

I hope that when you get into see someone, they do that for you, just tell you what seizure type it is ,and maybe have a look at your meds as well. They also could  see if there is something else more suitable than Dilantin, which is lousy on the mouth in the side effects it has in it's profile.
