Walking around the House / Making phone calls

Sun, 01/09/2005 - 14:16

Hi all

My name is Massimo and I'm from Switzerland. I was diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy about six yeas ago at the age of 23. I think that my seizures are somewhat strange:

My seizure are always during the night. Sometimes, I wake up with an intensive daja-vue/strange feelling in the stomach, sometimes not at all and the seizure takes it course and I pass out: I pick up my mobile phone (cellular phone) and call my mother to tell her that I'm frightend. It's something like an anxiety attack but I'm not aware of having called her early in the morning (even afterwards). She would then with me within a couple of minutes to calm me down. Sometimes, I would walk around the house, go to the toilet .. etc.

I've also done other strange things after my mum arrived: Like showing her all my perfumes in my bathroom or dancing in front of her :-) . So far, I've only had two grand-mal seizures after such a strange seizure.

I will be going to for a long term Video-EEG soon. I was wondering whether any of you experiences or makes the same thing during a seizure.

Thanks,

Massimo

Massimo,

First I want to say that I have a 'scratch' of Swidish in my family background.

Now about the epilepsy business. I have somewhat of the same or similiar problems like you. Those daja-vue/strange feelling in the stomach you're having are most likely the "AURAS", which fit into the simple partial seizure catagory. But for the times of 'walking around the house' and you don't or didn't know that you're doing this, may be the type of seizures called 'complex partial seizures' [CPS]. I use to have the CPS before but they're now undercontrol with the medications I'm taking, which by the way are Keppra & Lamictal.

As for you having to go to the toliet, does this usually happen shortly, within an hour, after you've had the auras? If you're not sure then try to keep track to see if there's a pattern. But if you are having this, then you may have nearly the exact same problem like me. Roughly 6 hours after I've eaten, I will have various amounts of pressure in my lower rightside of the abdomen and then all of a sudden the pressure shoots across and bam, my auras start. Mostly around an hour later need to go to the toilet for #2 business. If this sounds similiar to you own feelings then you may match something I just found out about just last week, online, called "abdominal epilepsy". I've had epilepsy for 18 years now, have gone through many tests and many different medication combonations, all the way up to pre-surgical testing. Results being to risky for indepth surgery because I may perminetly loose my speech. My next neurology appointment is near the end of next month February and I'm going to bring up what I found about abdominal epilepsy to the doctor's attention.

Here's the website where I found the information on abdominal epilepsy... http://www.meridianinstitute.com/abepilep.htm

Hope this helps. If you have anymore questions, even about the 24 hour video EEG, let us know. If this is your first video EEG, then I recommend that you take something along to keep you busy, like read a book, magazine, write a letter, whatever, just something to help make the time go by faster, because it can be VERY boring. I've gone through 3 seperate video EEGs myself.
