Vertigo and Epilepsy any connection?

Thu, 12/17/2009 - 04:14

I have complex partial seizures with secondary generalization.  I am recently diagnosed and am trying to learn as much as I can.  I was wondering if anyone else experiences vertigo?  It can happen in any position I am in and does not neccessitate a rapid change in position I can be perfectly still, if I am laying down for example, I will suddenly feel the room spinning (it even appears to me that it is visually) and sometimes I feel this odd sinking feeling, like I'm about to drop.  Does anyone else experience this? Even if not related to epilepsy is vertigo a bad sign?  Or is normal to experience it for no apparent reason?

I have had vertigo before and even had physical therapy for it. I do have complex partial seizures and drop seizures too. mainly if I miss medication it will happen.

The vertigo is usually long, or lasts a long time- more than just minutes. Vertigo can be due to an imbalance of fluid in the ear, or the equilimbrium can be the cause. Some people develop lots of fluid in their ears and this can cause those symtoms.

If you still have troubles with balance and vertigo- you might consult and ENT or Ear, nose and throat doctor who definitly could diagnose you pretty quick. They usually ask you to walk around or describe your symtoms. THere are even testing, which I had done, where you stand on a metal platform without your shoes, and the computer moves the platform while your in harness- so if you fall you won't get hurt. The computer measures how you move in responce to the movement. There are panels around you, in front and on both sides of you with some type of senory- so that you don't use the edge of the floor or other visual information to keep your balance. When I had the test- I was falling a lot when the computer moved the plate enough. The physical therapy for balance problems was neat and I felt it worked some- but some days are worse that others as far as my balance. I don't have a good gait while walking but my guide dog helps me with my balance as well as guiding my around things..

Take care, be safe.

You could be anemic, or your drugs could be making you dizzy. That has happened to me a lot! I also would get very lightheaded right before a sz, but that's not what's happening to you. I think that can also happen with low blood sugar, if you go long periods of time without eating.
