Seizures, cardiovascular training, and hyperventilation

Tue, 03/27/2007 - 19:03
I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced seizures (simple, complex, or secondary generalized) in the period immediately following intense aerobic training, such as running. I had a right temporal lobectomy on June 2, 2006 and was seizure-free until December 19th. Since then I've had three recurrences, two of which transpired within five minutes of aerobic activity. One of these was a simple partial seizure that generalized. I never had such experiences prior to my surgery, although I did on one or two occasions have a simple partial seizure during aerobic activity itself. I currently take Topomax and Lamictal.

Hi PaulF I haven't had surgery but recently as in about 3/4 weeks ago, I had a bad night of complex partial seizures and I believe it was due to running on the local beach that day. I was very tired that day as it was. I was up early enough for a weekend morning after working hard all week. It was Saturday. And I got up to do the weekly shopping in the supermarket. When I got home, I got straighht down into my studies (I go to classes 2 nights a weeks and i have exams coming up in May) and did this until about 5pm. I was very tired and my partner suggested we go to the beach. I was delighted! I badly wanted some fresh air. When we were on the beach, we ended up doing a lot of running to give ourselves some excercise, despite the fact that I was tired. I think we got home about 8pm, made the dinner had a shower and watched a bit of tv. When I hit the pillow that night, every time I was about to nod off to sleep, i would get a partial seizure. It was soooo annoying. I was awake for hours. I dont normally have seizures at night unless I'm very tired. Normally during the day when I have them. so maybe on your day of activity, you were actually very tired on top it all? Whenever i do exercise any other time I'm fine. Just this day, I was very tired and I'll know next time to be more careful.

Normally, hyperventilation can cause seizures. The lack of oxygen and build up of carbon dioxide messes up the brain transmissions. If you didn't have a seizure until later, it's probably becaused you had stressed you brain out, and while it's trying to recover, it goes hay-wire. It's not uncommon to have different seizures after surgery. During the surgery, they removed what they felt was the source of the seizures. So maybe there's a different part seizing, or a bit left over. It manifests differently in the brain, so the signs of the seizure is often different. It's VERY important to tell your neurologist. Let us know how things turn out. Jen
