How do I find a good Neurologist? What can I expect?

Wed, 01/26/2005 - 18:38
I don't think my Neurologist watches me as closely as he should. He often seems inaccessible, and he isn't as sensitive to my suffering as I would like him to be. However, he seems to know what he is doing medically. He is a heck of a lot better than my previous Neurologist who booted me out of his practice because he couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. What are reasonable expectations for me to have for a dr in this difficult field? I am willing to put up with a lot if I have to because I have an awesome psychiatrist who supervises all of my medical care, watches me very closely, and I can always get a hold of if I need help. Any ideas on how to find a really good Neurologist in my area? Can I do better than this guy? He has a zillion credentials after his name, clinical professor of this and that, etc. How meaningful is any of that stuff? He seems so busy working at his important sounding hospital position that I get lost in the shuffle. Please help, Editor!

Are you in England? If you are then you will need to discuss your query with your Doctor, then maybe be prepared for a wait to get into see one.Unless your Doctor is good that is,or you are prepared to pay .You will be asked what your seizures are like-keep a diary of your symptoms and take it with you to show him/her a copy of what you have been experiencing and what you want to ask,and don't be afraid...The Neurologist is there to help you,and will ask you a lot of questions as to all of this .Good Luck, and keep us posted.

Thanks for your responses! I live in Orange County, California, USA. I have a PPO so I can go to any doctor I choose. Cost is not an issue. I just want someone really, really good. Any ideas on organizations I could contact for recommendations? I need a specialist who can determine whether my headaches are in fact a rare form of epilepsy or migraines. Unfortunately, I don't know what kind of specialist that would be.
