How did you find the right neuro?

Mon, 10/01/2007 - 23:23
Haven't seen a neuro in years but am seeing one on 10/2. Any tips on finding the right one? Years ago my neuro seemed to be a smart person but I don't think she ever saw me as an individual with individual problems. I have never had my epilepsy explained to me. Guess I took what was handed to me. I need a neuro that will work with me rather than on me. I need one who will listen to me. After all, it,s me we will be talking about and damnit I have something to say and it matters. Did anyone have to shop around before you found the right one? When deciding on new meds was your opinion considered or did you do as I did and take the meds because the doc wouldn't listen to your conserns? Am I asking too much? Thank you all, you have taught me lots. Mom

Where are you located? I can give you the names of a few people that I would highly suggest. If you would like to talk, feel free to email me off list at apageor2@gmail.com and for more information. I found my neurologist now through a previous neurologist so it was a referral in a sense as I was moving across the country and needed to find another doctor. :) Your opinions matter a lot and if you're not sure about medications or have questions on them they should be confronted head on - period. If the doctor cannot answer them there's a problem. You can never ask too many questions to a doctor and they should never feel you are asking too many questions. Something you might want to consider is taking someone with you to for support.

My wife has some wonderful doctors. They are not her neurologists though. She has seen several different neurologists over the years. She has yet to find one that she really likes or is comfortable with. The one she is currently seeing is a young one just starting his practice. He spent a lot of time with her and I think was good in explaining things, but he is very much a "by the book meds and vns" guy (which may not be a bad thing, just not quite what my wife wants). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Check out my chart of alternative epilepsy treatments.

I called up my HMO and said I have epilepsy and I need a nuerologist. I think because it had been previously diagnosed so it was in the records they said you have this person. It took one call. I had a nuerologist who is an epileptologist. I had gone to other places because my mom had me go to a private nuerologist. The private one was lame the HMO guy is great. He also has a lot more access to things such as testing and ways to send me to other hospitals if the HMO my insurance is in doesn't have the needed things like immediate VEEGs.
