The Ambush of Christmas Displays. Advocacy Issue

Sat, 01/08/2005 - 11:56
I can not speak for anyone else but I for one am massively relieved Christmas is over for one thing - I am no longer ambushed by walking into EVERY store that has a blinking, winking Christmas tree or other ornamental display. I love the little fiberoptic trees? However, that blinking and sequeing rapidly into different colors on and off? I can do little quick sneaky peeks ONLY to see one and if I do more than that for whatever reason I start staring and I can't pull my eyes off - until I drop. My husband and I went on an all day shopping trip, which I already knew would probably end in disaster, it did, because I didn't feel well and every single place we entered had blinky winky's for Christmas displays and I'm photoconvulsive. We did go shopping that day though even tho I didn't feel well in the morning and every single dang store I went into - I dropped. The displays also tend to be towards the front of the store or towards the ceiling where all can see (thanks a lot!) It became ridiculous! I finally stopped recovering around noon, got worse and worse, wound up going to the ER because I couldn't recover between drops and had a status TC. Bah hum bug. I love the pretty displays as much as anyone, it's just that my brain can't handle them and applying "true grit" is not the answer. Is it pul-leaze possible merchants who might read this turn off the - blinkies and winkies at Christmas especially, leave the pretty tree lights on steadily, not blinking, but also - all other times with other displays? Any merchants out there reading I hope?Question: Did anyone else have this problem? I do every single year. Tis getting old.Statement: The suggestion of wearing sun glasses, wearing one of my very low dipping western hats, patching an eye, and on and on ad nauseum does NOT work when a strobing game is directly in your face as you walk into a store.I thought I had made great ground and I was very proud of myself in getting some specific Walmarts, not meaning exactly to single them out, to respect those of us with photoconvulsiveness to NOT plug in and to REMOVE those horrid strobe games just as you enter the store. I have been in many WalMarts and every single one has strobbing games as you enter the store. No escaping that. And it's not only WalMart either. I was successful in two communities where I lived in having those games turned off only to have them turned back on again later. They must be great revenue makers. WalMart has been very good to sz'ing me, and responsive. This is yet another request for respect. For those of us who are photoconvulsive walking into WalMart, at least for me is like going through a line of NFL linemen. First I have to get passed the strobing lights, then I have to get passed the overhead s-l-o-w-l-y turning ceiling fans (gasp gasp), then I have to BE sure I do not look at one of the huge amount of register digital displays that may not look like they twitter to the average person but are blinking like crazy to me. And IF I can get passed the front of the store? I have a chance at staying on my feet. What would happen if en masse we all politely explained the problem, asked at least to have the strobbing games removed or unplugged? Why did I post? To complain and breath a sight of relief Christmas is over and stores are no longer - an ambush and hit and run on an epileptic. Did anyone else have this problem? If you did? Did you talk to the merchants about it because I did and found all were more than willing to turn off the blinky winky's as long as I was in there and I did tell them when I was leaving. I DO wish though since more and more stores are adding s-l-o-w revolving ceiling fans which throw me to the floor or make me start winking out and jerking, if that practice could be stopped or at least make it easier for me in some places to say - could you turn off your fan? I do ask that in my library and other places and they'd much rather turn off the fans then have me hit the floor, or the counter or crash over a very large display of anything - all of which I've done. I'd like to see a movement of all of us with this problem to start asking these be turned off as an advocacy issue. I ask this in the probably stupid thought it will start a national trend. And cows fly over the moon but Christmas Is NO fun for me with holiday winky and blinkys, combined with the already strobes, and flickering digital displays. Again, I consider this an advocacy issue.Comments? (I will jokingly say I will not accept comments such as this is part of life and I need to get used to it. I do feel it's a big problem, for many, merchants should be more responsible. And it ruins shopping, thus I spend less, if any merchants are reading. We do this ridiculous thing where my husband has to go into establishments and do "reconnaicense (sp?) before I can enter. What do you do about outdoor displays tho? You're TRAPPED!) I'm making a joke of this but it is no joke to me. I was hospitalized TWICE for status in TWO days, when I went shopping and a dropping.
