New Insurance requiring me to take generic tegretol
Fri, 01/30/2009 - 16:48Because of new employment my insurance has recently changed requiring my 90 day supply of tegretol be ordered through my insurances mail order pharmacy. My insurance requires that a generic be substitued when available. I have been on brand name Tegretol for about 12 years now and do not want to switch to the generic formula. But with the new insurance that will cost me $175 for every 90 day supply. Old job and old insurance I only paid $40!! Crazy! I am very hesitant to switch to the generic from what I have read. My seizures have been controlled for the past 12 years and I have been seizure free since starting on meds. My question I guess is what does everyone recommend my course of actions be to get my insurance to cover the brand formula at a more reasonable cost. The mail order pharmacy says they will send my the brand name if that is what my doctor and I decide but it will be $175. Just not sure who I should be contacting to help get this med covered.

Hi candygirl! What does your doc say?? Mine doesn't want me on generic either...so on my prescription, he is very specific that it is to be filled with the brand name only. Also, if the insurance wants to gripe about it, your doctor should be able to file papers with the insurance company stating the the brand name is medically necessary and asking for a waiver as far as the generics are concerned.
