New Insurance requiring me to take generic tegretol

Fri, 01/30/2009 - 16:48

Because of new employment my insurance has recently changed requiring my 90 day supply of tegretol be ordered through my insurances mail order pharmacy.  My insurance requires that a generic be substitued when available.  I have been on brand name Tegretol for about 12 years now and do not want to switch to the generic formula.  But with the new insurance that will cost me $175 for every 90 day supply.  Old job and old insurance I only paid $40!!  Crazy!   I am very hesitant to switch to the generic from what I have read.  My seizures have been controlled for the past 12 years and I have been seizure free since starting on meds.   My question I guess is what does everyone recommend my course of actions be to get my insurance to cover the brand formula at a more reasonable cost.  The mail order pharmacy says they will send my the brand name if that is what my doctor and I decide but it will be $175.   Just not sure who I should be contacting to help get this med covered.

Hi candygirl!  What does your doc say??  Mine doesn't want me on generic either...so on my prescription, he is very specific that it is to be filled with the brand name only.  Also, if the insurance wants to gripe about it, your doctor should be able to file papers with the insurance company stating the the brand name is medically necessary and asking for a waiver as far as the generics are concerned.

Hello! Thanks for the quick reply, this is definitely dwelling on me what to do.  The doc prefers to have the brand name, but the nurse understands that insurance companies are now making you get the generic filled.   I am going to start making phone calls next week to the insurance company I guess to see what I need to do to file and what the doctor needs to submit.  Is that what you ended up doing?  Did your insurance company agree to allow you to have the brand name drug then?  Thanks for the tip! I am just very nervous about changing something that has worked so well for so long.  And so mad that if this is what theraputically treats me why should I have to pay such a huge amount for my meds.   $175 is a lot, over the course of the whole year that is going to be super expensive!
