Worried about my father

Thu, 04/24/2014 - 17:46

Hi all I'm new here from the uk seeking advice..

my father had a siezure in the night last week it was horrible scared my mum, all of us he was unconscious for about 30 minutes bit his tounge, really scary.

he went to a and e over here in the uk and all they did where blood tests and heart rate... I stressed he needed a brain scan as it was clearly some form of siesure and they said they do not do that in a and e and he would be referee to a fit clinic...we're still waiting for an appointment.

basically I'm really worried and the dr told me one of the blood tests they did actually looked for any sign of brain damage so if it was anything bad it would of picked up.. My father has had no history of this EVER in his life and has always appeared a strong healthy man of 64 years of age... He passed out this time last year but due to some sort of fever sickness bug..that's it..the next day he carried on as if nothing had happend no after effects. Nothing.

I know no one here can really diagnose my father but I'm just looking for clarity or maybe a close enough answer or idea what i might be dealing with, saying that it may not even be epilepsy... So strange

The ER does tests and they do

The ER does tests and they do not know all the tests needed to diagnose epilepsy. As for seizures there have been people who have had a seizure and never had another again. Your post also says he blacked out which could be due to the fever but if it wasn't then it too could be classified as a seizure. As for him having epilepsy the tests needed are an EEG and an MRI.. The EEG is a tests that is on the electeical output on the brain. The MRI is a picture of the brain which shows anything that could be on the brain.. You also need to know that anybody can have a seizure at some time in their lives and yes that they can have epileps My epilepsy was caused by a blow to the headat the age of 6-8. That blow to the head caused a hemmorage to the brain which left scar tissue. Understand that epilepsy can be treated and there are many medications out that do control seizures. Relax you have come here and gotten a few asnwers. You were right we can't diagnose but we can give you information. The seizure could have been epilepsy but then there are other things that can cause someone to have a seizure. I have a friend that has heart problems and at this time his doctors are trying to come up with other medications be can use since one he has been takinf for years can and has caused him to have seizures. IT is one of the side effects of one of his medications/ Oh and some people with diabeties can also have seizures if their sugar levels get off balance. I hope this helps and your father gets the assistance he needs Joe
