Abnormal EEG while sleeping but no seizures

Fri, 12/12/2014 - 22:38

My son is 5. He just got home from a 48 hour EEG. His first EEG showed spikes in the occipital lobe while sleeping. But it wasn't meshing with all his symptoms, mainly some issues getting to the bathroom in time/going frequently. He had a few headaches and he occationally has issues focusing in school. So the 48 hour EEG showed the same spikes during sleep. Daytime activity is completely normal. Doctor says he's not having seizures because there's no aura. So then...what is it? She didn't want to medicate him to treat his EEG (I agree). She then proceeded to tell me my son may be developing ADHD because he attends a public school online. (I don't see what his schooling has to do with an attention disorder or with why we were investigaing this abnormality further.) I am trying to tell myself "it's not a big deal and he will grow out of it" but I am having a lack of closure. And my initial complaints are still not solved. Any suggestions? Just trying to make sure I'm not missing anything.

The list of symtoms is just

The list of symtoms is just that a list of thngs that people might have. Like the list of side effects on medications. Is Doctor a specialist in epilepsy? I ask that because unless he specializes in epilepsy he doesn't know everything regarding seizures. I can't remember having an aura but there are many people who have them. A person can have differrent types of seizures. The EEG shows different things to different doctors because they read the electrical impulses comming from the brain. Think of all the different things that are associated with the brain. Epilepsy is only one of them/ ADHD is another as is ALHZ and there are several others. My doctor knew I was having seizures and I was on medications for over a year before goig thru a battery of tests. I had had 20-25 different EEG's all came back normal. The other tests all came back normal. My diagnosis was Grand mal epilepsy. Petite mal epilepsy and Focal motor epilepsy. The diagnosis was before the neurologists went into their specialities. My neurologst specialised in Parkinsons. I got the one that specialized in Epilepsy when he went into his specialization. So yes your son could have ADHD but he could also have epilepsy or even both combined.I have had grand mal seizures, petite mal seizures and focal seizures. which means I have a gamet of different types of seizures. Do I have them now compared to the ones I had 50+ years ago? That answer is NO. Do I want to take medications? I don't like taking medications and haven't wanted to take them. But I would rather take medication then have my seizures get worse. Whem I stated I don't like taking meds that includes all medications and not just AEDs.All a seizure is is an electrical impuse going off wrong in the brain. Which causes a chain reaction.  If Doctor wasn't a specialist in elilepsy then you need the tests taken to one. If not medicated his seizures will get worse and more seizures will happen and closer together. I say that becaise I had been having seizures for about a year before I had a grand mal seizure. Medications today are being created so they have fewer side effects an they don't effect the persons body as much. In my 20's I was taking phenobarb. dilantin and tegratol. The new neurologist I went to because I had moved ansked me how I woke up in the mornings. He asked that question because of the ammount of phenobarbitol  I took in one day would put the average man to sleep for 24 hours. Add the other nedications which also calmed down the central nervious system and you had one big cocktail.  I hope this helps and he gets the assistance he needs. Joe

Is the neurologist or doctor

Is the neurologist or doctor a specialist in epilepsy???  As for symptoms of seizures and types of epilepsy they are generalized. Not everyone with a specific type of epilepsy will have all the sympyoms. Just for instance absence seizures look like the person having them is day dreaming. Well people that have focal seizures look just like that too. As for EEG's there are more people that have EEG's come back normal. I had 20-25 come back normal. But I was having seizures. With a neurologist that specializes in epilepsy those abnormalities are seizure activity. The activity is there but the person may and is generally not in a seizure. They are comming from the area in the brain which shows the activity. With me they come from the left lobes of my brain, ADHD also stems from the brain as does ALOHZ and many otherr things. Before neurologists went into specialitions the neurologists treated everything stemming from the central nervious system And there are many things which start with activity comming from the brain.Medications are being vreated to treat and stop seizures and other things comming from the brain. All a seizure is is a electrical impulse going off  wrong in the brain which causes a chain reaction, To see what happens stack dominoes up on end. Tap the first and watch them all fall. Your tap was the electrical impulse going off wrong. Now stack them up again. Put your finger between the first and second dominoes. Tap the first. The electrical impulse going off wrong. It falls onto your finger. Your finfer stope it from falling iinto the mext which is the chain reaction. In the second stack your fimger would be medication. As for th doctor telling you he could be developing ADHD well it is possiable. Unless the doctor is a specialist then he doesn't know. As for all seizures having an aura. Well I have had seizures for 50+ years and have never had an aura.
