Treating Epilepsy Naturally-Patricia A. Murphy. I just got this yesterday, it's amazing how many different options there are for treating epilepsy that most people don't know about..most docs will tell you that the "alternative treatments" are unproven but according to a research group of the name of which i cannot remember, only 20 percent of conventional treatments underwent a double blind placebo controlled study. i will agree with the book that you need a mix of conventional medicine and alternative therapy both, which is the route i will definitely go if E is my "problem." and i think you should know the real truth about these antiseizure meds..prolonged use of them can make you more at risk for cancer, some of them have possible side effects like lupus, hepatitis, anemia, anorexia. They aren't common side effects but it's scary to think that you can develop other potentially fatal diseases/disorders from treating another potentially fatal disorder. I also learned that quite a few people with epilepsy have food allergies and some of them can contribute to seizures and it talks about things like aspartame and MSG and all these things that can be toxic to people with any seizure disorder. Also, studies have shown that anywhere between 50-90 percent of people with epilepsy have constant or periodic low blood sugar and the majority of people with "E" will develop low blood sugar right before a seizure. it discusses many different herbs that have a soothing affect on the brain and can potentially help you keep things in check. The thing that interested me most is that there is an unofficial but convincing connection between migraines and epilepsy. one doctor in the book mentions that on a continuum migraines would be on one side and epilepsy on the other. the woman that wrote this book also states that she has met a very large number of people who have epilepsy who's mothers suffered from migraines, and that there does some to be some sort of a genetic link between the 2. my mom has suffered from migraines for pretty much the entirety of her life, and since epilepsy has been nowhere near ruled out for me, it seems to me like there is a definite connection in my case also. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, best source of information that I have found on the subject.

Already working with an alternative treatment myself, along with continuing AEDs, and ever since Jan 2005 positive results are continuing. For more details about what I am doing, take a look at message #20 in the topic titled Does anyone relate?
