Lyrica: Does it work?

Fri, 11/28/2008 - 14:35
My neurologist has just prescribed me Lyrica as a complementary therapy to my normal dose of Lamictal. In general, i take care of myself (exercise, get enough sleep, limit alcohol). Strangely, as i've gotten older (31yrs old) i tend to induce seizures by panic or anxiety at the general prospect of having a seizure. for example, walking into a crowded restaurant, a subway, or other stimulating environments. it's tough to tell which comes first, the anxiety or the aura. nonetheless, they seem to build on each other and sometimes result in a seizure. i've developed some methods of dealing with this, such as walking away from the situation, centering myself, sitting down and finding ways to calm myself down. this never used to happen to me. my nocturnal seizures have decreased, largely to staying away from alcohol, but i've had a few seizures while awake the past few months, which is rare. they used to be mostly nocturnal. i have to say, limiting alcohol has been a big help. it's a little socially limiting, but better than a seizure. so, after that long diatribe, has anyone out there had success with Lyrica, as far as reducing the anxiety that often comes along with epilepsy and the panic of having a seizure? thanks!

yes it does work, each person is different. I am on Lamictal. I went on Lyrica to try to change from klonopin as my second med. I also know exactly what you mean about the stress of having seizures since my simple partials starting again in the last few weeks. do you have a med tag too? If you are scared get one of those. They have nice ones at HopePaige.com I stopped taking the Lyrica because I felt so groggy and had side effects such as amnesia and feeling dumbed down. But that is just me. and don't let anyone tell you what your experience will be. I thought one time when I read about another persons experience on my epilepsy.com, that it would be the same for me. BUt, we are all different// some people really like Lyrica. It's a newer drug too, so maybe it will be good for you. Blessings, Ariel

Hi Andrew,

I hope you are still checking in on this site because I see that you have been on Lyrica since November.  It's May now.  And I have just started it.  How is it going for you with this one?  I'm also on Lamictal.  That brings up a whole other question too.  Are you losing your hair?  It seems a lot of people are.  Anyways, I hope you are here to advice me a little.  Thanks.
