Increase in Seizures after giving birth

Tue, 06/12/2007 - 19:34
Hi. I'm writing on behalf of my wife who has seen a dramatic rise in the frequency of her seizures since giving birth. We switched her medication from Depacote, which did a great job of controlling seizures before we got pregnant, to Lamictil for the obvious reasons. She had one seizure while pregnant and another while in labor (we had an emergency c section). Since giving birth 7 1/2 months ago she's had 4 seizures, whereas before becoming pregnant she had had 4 seizures in 8 years. We are transitioning back to Depacote now, which used to do a really good job of controlling, but she had another seizure this past weekend, which has us nervous that what used to work doesn't work anymore. Has anyone else had post-partum issues regarding frequency of seizures and if so, how have you dealt with it? Also, if you've had a good or bad experience with CAM please let me know. As you can imagine, this has been incredibly stressful and we are looking for ideas on how to get this under control once again. Thanks so much. Adam

Yes.  I was seizure free from 2006 to 2014. After having my first baby 18 days after having my first baby I had 3 seizures in one night (7 days after baby).I had only ever had 3 in my life.I had transitioned from Sodium Valproate 1.5 years before conceiving and was seizure free my entire pregnancy (bit looking back experienced Aura). It is believed the hormone changes caused the issues in addition with painkillers (Oxycodone and Morphine) which caused Aura to occur with alarmingly increased frequency.None of this has yet been investigated fully.

Hi adam I was depakote for a long time and found out sometimes it took a while to get my levels built back up. I started workouts and it seem they levels were too low so my doctor jack it up a bit. Talked to your doc and see what he says/ Good luck and God bless........m

Thanks for responding, m. I'm sorry I don't know all the lingo, but what are "workouts"? Also, what dose of Depakote were you taking before pregnancy and what are you on now? How long did it take to get back to a comfortable level? Thanks again. Best, Adam
