Alternative therapies for adults

Wed, 04/20/2011 - 14:48

I am currently on 2000 mg Keppra, 450 mg Lamictal, and my doctor wants to add Vimpat to the mix. I have read quite a few negative information about it. What are the general side affects of it with Lamictal and Keppra?

I have JME and have been on numerous medications for over 25 years. Unfortunatley, none have controlled the seizures. Mostly the myoclonic seizures are not under control. However, I have also had my myoclonic seizures status into grandmal seizures about once a year. I also believe I have had an increase in petit mal seizures.

I am also doing research into alternative therapies like special diets to help control seizures.I also have migraines and restless leg syndrom as well as Celiac Disease. I have read about Magnesium Deficits. I am going to see an encrinologist because it is believed that my hormones might also be involved in my increase of seizures.

I will be at Mayo and plan to make an appt. there to see a nuerologist. Does anyone know if any of them might be knowledgeable about alternatives therapies and willing to help me look at these possibilities.

Hey,

Just read your post and I am sure it is probably a little late, but better than never.

I have been taking Tegretol and the same amount of Keppra as you with little success for reliable control. Neurologist suggested I should try Vimpat, so I agreed. I am not sure if it is the Vimpat or the combination of the three, but I have been, with exception for a few minor auras, seizure free for a little over 3 years now...with little or no side effects.

I am almost convinced it was because of the Vimpat as there is no other real answer. I was unsure about taking it from the start as I live in Sweden and nobody had taken it here yet. I am still unsure of long-term effects, but life is about quality first and if it ends up cutting a few years off at the end I am okay with that.

Hope that helps,

Sean
