I'm sorry..you were boring me. What did you say again?
My kids are fighting..can we talk later?
I'm sorry..you must be hearing things
Of course I'm paying attention..just not to you

Most of the people who know me know I have epilepsy. Even so, I grow tired of trying to explain absence seizures to them especially when a small part of me feels that what they don't understand is automatically held in suspect of being something else altogether...such as simply not paying attention to what they are saying to me.
I have problems with absences and notice them more when talking on the phone, watching TV or reading a book. And, of course, my moments of not paying attention happens when on the phone.
Typical phone conversation:
Person: Did you hear me?
Me: When?
Person: Just now...
Me: Concerning what?
Person: You weren't paying attention again, were you?
Me: Every chance I got.
Person: Well?
Me: Well what?
...I finally found a great excuse that creates total understanding on their part to where they are more than happy to repeat themselves. Static. Yep, they can understand and identify with static on the line. It's happened to them.
Now to come up with a good reason for throwing the phone....
