Spotlight on Art Programs in Idaho

Epilepsy News From: Monday, December 16, 2019

This month, the Epilepsy Foundation shines a spotlight on Epilepsy Foundation of Idaho (EFID). They are providing support, an outlet for creativity, and fun for Idaho's children and adults living with epilepsy through their Art Support Groups and Paint Nights.

Providing Support through Creativity

Who says epilepsy has to affect the creative process?

“At the Epilepsy Foundation of Idaho, we try to emphasize the innovative minds of children living with epilepsy through a support group centered around art of some sort, such as painting or crafting,” said Executive Director of EFID Heidi McAdams.

This program provides a way for children with epilepsy and their families to connect with others in a lighthearted atmosphere, where the kids have the opportunity to witness and understand that they are not alone in this journey.

“I have lots of fun painting,” says NaKiyah Z., a program participant. "It makes me feel comfortable talking about my epilepsy and even taking meds in front of others because I knew everyone in attendance has epilepsy as well and aren't judging me."

The Art Support Groups are entirely funded by the Epilepsy Foundation Idaho and continue to grow each time as EFID and its services become more prominent within the community.

Fun for Adults Too

“We host Paint Nights every few months for adults affected by epilepsy and always have a huge turnout of about 80 attendees each time,” said Heidi. “A professional artist comes in and leads everyone to paint something incredible. We only ever hear positive feedback about how fun and helpful these nights are and how they provide a safe environment where everyone feels welcome. This is what we want for our Art Support Groups: to give children living with epilepsy in the community that safe environment and feeling of acceptance that the adults receive at Paint Nights."

EFID’s recent Annual Gala in November doubled their annual revenue and will now fund more dates for the Art Support Group as well as Paint Nights specifically for children in 2020.
